Larry Dallas Holverson

 

Larry Dallas Holverson, 74, of Alexandria rounded third base and sprinted home on December 21, 2023, crossing home plate at 3:45 p.m. with the final and winning run in the game of his life from complications of Parkinson's disease, which was diagnosed in 2007.

Larry was born January 1, 1949 at St. Luke's Hospital in Alexandria, the first baby born that year in Douglas County. He was the son of Ray and Fern Holverson of Evansville. The family moved to Alexandria from the family farm south of Evansville in 1957 when Larry was in the fourth grade.

Larry had a passion for sports. Baseball was his favorite. He and his wife Joan went on several chartered bus baseball trips for vacation. His second favorite was stock car racing. He and Joan got to meet Cale Yarborough (his hero racer) in South Carolina. They also attended a race in Darlington. He served as Sports Editor at the Alexandria Echo Press for 38 years.

His most cherished accomplishments were being named to the Viking Speedway Hall of Fame, Fellowship of Christian Athletes award, as well as the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

He had a goal of bringing a smile to people he would meet. His "just about perfect" response when asked how he was did the trick most of the time. However, some looked at him as being a bit conceited.

Larry loved his family, the people he worked with, awesome friends, coaches, students, and the members of his Neuro Fit class -- who were very close as they battled hard to prolong their journey with Parkinson's.

Larry is survived by his wife, Joan; brother Darrel (Jan) Holverson; niece, Brianna (Travis) Olson, and their son Henry; nephew, Ryan (Jill) Holverson, and their two children, Owen and Ellie.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents, Ray and Fern; his half-sister, Judy Harmon; and baby sister, Geradine.

Music for Larry’s service will be soloist Tara Bitzan and organist Randy Morken.

Serving as pallbearers are Dale Anderson, Marlin Anderson, Gary Anderson, Ryan Holverson, Travis Olson and Jason Dinham.

Services will be held on Friday, December 29 at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Pastor Megan Preston officiating. A visitation will take place on Thursday, December 28, 2023, from 4-6 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be at Kinkead Cemetery.
