On February 8, 2026, with his two sons by his side, Larry Dean Hyde peacefully went to Heaven. He had been living in
Charlotte, NC, for many years. His 84 years of life were a blessing to his family and many friends.
Larry was born on the family farm on July 24, 1941, the son of Harold Laverne and Mildred Lucille Hyde. He grew up in Callao, Missouri in north central Missouri as well as Kansas City while his father served during WW2. Larry graduated from Callao High School where he excelled as an athlete, especially in basketball, averaging 21 points per game. He was named to the Missouri All Star team.
Larry married Carole Stamp and to this union Anthony Scott and Timothy Mark were born. He supported his family while working his way through college beginning at Moberly Junior College then graduating from Northeast Missouri State College. With his BS in education, he taught high school at Clopton School in Clarksville, MO. In addition to teaching, he also served as the basketball, track and cross-country coach.
In 1968, he and the family moved to Columbia, MO, where he worked for the University of Missouri while earning a master's degree in public health. He later accepted the position of Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Akron, Ohio. In 1978, he was named the Director of Continuing Education for the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He retired from UNC-CH in 2003 at age 62. He was a devoted Tar Heel basketball fan.
Larry was a man of many interests and skills. He enjoyed many projects over the years including buying land and building the family home while in graduate school full time. In 1984, he purchased a large house that was built in 1890. He spent 3 years renovating the entire house and grounds culminating in the reopening of the Wardell Guest House in Macon, MO which was placed on the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places. Always open to new experiences, Larry and his brother, Donald, opened a satellite dish manufacturing and distribution company.
Larry always enjoyed boats and the water. After retirement, he relocated to eastern North Carolina where he renovated several wooden Chris Craft cabin cruisers. He lived on his boat, "The Hydeaweigh," in various marinas in Edenton and Little Washington, NC. Not one to be idle, he pursued training and received certification from the US Coast Guard as
US Merchant Marine Officer. His new license allowed him more water adventures as he moved boats up and down the intercoastal waterway.
Larry also had a life-long love of athletics and exercise. He was an avid runner and later in life enjoyed tennis, biking, and hiking with his sons, daughters in-law, grandchildren, and anyone else who wanted to join in. He was kind, soft-spoken, and enjoyed all sorts of social activities. He had the gift of being a great conversationalist. There was usually a good story involved.
His parents, sister Hazel Pagliai, and brother Donald preceded him in death. He is survived by Tony Hyde (
Charlotte, NC), Tim & Doree Hyde (Cincinnati, OH), grandchildren Andrew, Alexander, Will, Emily, Ari and Sara. Also surviving are many nephews, nieces, and cousins. He had many lifelong friends.
A memorial service will be held on March 7, 2026, 2:00PM at Christ Lutheran Church where Larry was a member.
