when no one listened
he yelled out
when no one looked
he got in their way
when they were calloused
he made them feel the suffering
when they were indifferent
he wrote a play awakening reality
we all are different but connected
when no one listens
yell out
well done Larry Kramer
rest In Peace

He was a giant. I feel this with such gravity of sadness and responsibility and gratitude that its crushing me as I write this. We lost generations of knowledge and experiences in the AIDS holocaust but because of Larry Kramer and the activists he worked with we didnt lose everything. I loved his unapologetic almost punk rock grit. And his bookish normality. And his willingness to fail and feel and continue to live even though death attended his every move and thought and tried to claim him over and over.
I remember Grand Central Station getting quiet and then holy. The seriousness of the ritual and the dangerous feeling of inevitability. I thought I was going to die, too.
In the subsequent years I admired the artworks he wrought from the experience. The way he bridged it and transcended it and allowed it to become history. And most of all how he told our story in a way that anyone could listen and understand something about it personally. He helped us feel it, together, after the horror had passed and we might have never looked back or understood the need to do so. He knew.
I mourn him.
