Larry Mathews Obituary

Larry Wayne Mathews, 80, of Malvern, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2025. He was born on March 28, 1945, in Malvern, to Milburn and Jewel Gladys (Lee) Mathews.

Larry was a man who believed in hard work and living true to his values. He built his own excavation business and even constructed his own home, accomplishments that spoke to his determination and resourcefulness. After retiring from Alcoa, Larry never really slowed down—he stayed active in his work and community until his final days.

Faith was at the center of Larry’s life. He rarely missed a church service and lived each day guided by his love for the Lord. When his hearing and health began failing him, attending church became difficult, however, Larry continued to practice weekly Sunday Bible studies in his home with his wife, Yolanda, and continued his daily Bible readings. He was also known for speaking his mind, whether in conversations about politics or while watching his favorite westerns and Fox News. Outside of work and church, Larry loved the outdoors. Bird watching brought him joy, and he had an incredible gift for recognizing birds by their songs.

Larry leaves behind his loving wife of 25 years, Irma Yolanda Mathews, and his two beloved dogs, Wendy and Tiny Boy. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Spainhour, and her husband Bud—who was not only a brother-in-law but also a lifelong best friend. His nieces and nephews, Vince Mathews, Marlo Franks, Ty Spainhour, Michael Mathews, Tracy Spires, and Angie Lipka, will carry many special memories of him. Larry will also be deeply missed by a large circle of extended family and friends who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Milburn and Jewel Gladys Mathews, and his brothers, Bobby and Johnny Mathews.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, September 30, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., both at Smith Family Funeral Home in Benton, Arkansas (322 N Market Street). Family and friends are invited to come together to honor and celebrate Larry’s life.

Larry will be remembered for his strong faith, tireless work ethic, and the love he shared with those around him. His presence will be missed more than words can express, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
