Larry Payne Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 26, 2026.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Larry Richard Payne, age 75, on Sunday, February 22, 2026. Larry had spent the last several years in Staunton, Virginia, with his beloved wife, Judy. After a recent cancer diagnosis, he chose to spend his final days in Bloomington, Indiana, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He passed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories.

Larry was a devoted husband, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He will be remembered for his deep love of family, his warm sense of humor, and his remarkable ability to make friends wherever he went. He found great joy in the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting, camping, cooking, and spending meaningful time with those he loved.

Larry was born on December 8, 1950, to Richard and Virginia Payne. He spent his early years working on the family farm in Monroe County, where he developed a strong work ethic and a lifelong appreciation for the simple things in life.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for four years, including a tour in Vietnam aboard the USS Tutuila. His military service was a source of great pride throughout his life.

On June 22, 1974, Larry married the love of his life, Judy. Together, they shared 51 wonderful years of marriage, building a life filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories. Larry and Judy were deeply devoted to their family and especially treasured their time with their grandsons, Dwayne and Jeremy, and great-grandson, Jameson.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Judy Payne; his father, Richard Payne (Patty); his brother, Gary Payne (Jeanette); his sister, Cathy Sears (Jeff); his brother, Dennis Payne (Jan); his step-sister, Denean Gillenwater (Scott); his step-brother, Dirk Robosky (Susan); and his stepsons, David Simmons (Brigitte), Mike Simmons, and Chris Simmons. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Payne, and his step-brother, Dale Hayden.

A service to celebrate Larry's life will be held on Saturday, February 28, at 2:00 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church in Dolan, 6055 Old State Road 37, Bloomington, IN 47408. All who knew and loved Larry are welcome to attend. A meal and time of fellowship will follow the service. Military Honors will be provided by the Monroe County Honor Guard.

Larry will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Larry's honor.
