Larry Redding Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Heritage Funeral Home and Chapel, Inc. - Marietta on Mar. 9, 2026.
Larry David Redding, affectionately known as David, age 79, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Born in 1946 in Atlanta, Georgia, to Floyd and Flossie Redding, David was a lifelong resident of the city he loved and proudly called home.

From a young age, David displayed remarkable intelligence and curiosity. Gifted with an IQ of 130, who was considered a Vocabularian for his vast vocabulary and knowledge of the genus of words, he possessed a deep love for learning and observing the world around him. He graduated with Honors from Charles Lincoln Harper High School in the Class of 1964, the first graduating class of Harper High. He was on the Baseball Team and the Basketball Team. He was on the Yearbook Staff and was a member of the Chorus and the Lyre Club. He was voted "Cutest" of his class.

One of his greatest passions was the outdoors, particularly birdwatching, where he found peace and joy in nature. He was gifted in the binomial nomenclature of birds and had a deep appreciation for wildlife and the natural world. David was also passionate about hiking and, in his younger years, enjoyed long-distance running.

Another lifelong passion of David's was music. He had a beautiful falsetto voice with a vocal range extending down to baritone. In his younger years, he was a member of the Hunter Street West Quartet, where he shared his musical gifts and love for singing with others alongside Mr. Butch Richardson, Mr. Ron Foster, and Mr. Otis Whittener (deceased).

David honorably served his country in the United States Armed Forces during the Peacetime and Vietnam era. He served in the United States Air Force from July 21, 1964, to July 19, 1968, and later continued his service in the United States Army from November 25, 1974, to November 23, 1977. His dedication to service was a source of pride throughout his life.

He had a love for the sciences. Following his military service, David dedicated his career to helping others. He had an early career as a Dental Lab Technician and then as a Pharmacy Technician. He believed in supporting other Veterans and did so by not only working for the Veterans Administration Hospital, but later volunteering his time and talents there as well. His career culminated in retirement as a Social Worker for Grady Memorial Hospital. His work reflected his lifelong commitment to service, empathy, and care of his military brethren and others.

Above all, David treasured his family. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Nichole Reed (Alton). He is further survived by his beloved grandchildren, Breighan Wilson (Steven), Mallory Reed, and Kayleigh Dallas Hutchinson, as well as his cherished great-grandchildren, Elenore Wilson and Stevie Wilson.

He also leaves to cherish his memory his sisters, LaVerna Cash and Luncino Jeter Crawford (Rev. Joseph L. Crawford, Sr.), and his brothers, Ernest Redding (Pamela) and Carl H. Jeter, Jr. (Angela). His best friends Butch Richardson (Geraldine) and Marcia Culpepper.

David will be remembered for his intelligence, kindness, his ability to be REAL and 100% authentically himself at all times, and his deep appreciation for the natural world. His legacy of service to his country, his community, and his family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Visitation for Mr. Redding will take place from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at Heritage Funeral Home and Chapel, 907 Church Street Extension, NW, Marietta, GA 30060.

The graveside service for Mr. Redding will take place at 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr., Canton, GA 30114.
