Larry Schuman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Regency Mortuary - Sun City on Jan. 20, 2026.
On January 14, 2026, Lawrence A. Schuman II, known by most people as "Larry," went to meet his Lord and Savior. He passed away peacefully at the age of 83 after living a full and purposeful life defined by dedication to his faith, his family, and his profession.

Larry was born on June 11, 1942, to parents Lawrence and Grace in Manhattan, New York. Living in the Astoria and Jackson Heights neighborhoods of Queens, he was a loving brother who was always there for his sisters, Lorraine and Grace. Growing up, he had many friends and enjoyed playing sports, with a special fondness for baseball and stickball. He began his college education at the City University of New York.

Over the course of his life, Larry was blessed to share marriage with five loving and supportive women. The first of them was Connie Korteland, and they wed in New York in 1962. Larry and Connie loved to travel. They took a cross country trip to Arizona, and they liked the area so well that they decided to stay. After some time, they realized they were on different paths and chose to move forward separately. Larry then resumed his studies at Arizona State University.

In 1966, Larry met Barbara Donald, and they wed in 1967. Larry adopted Barbara's two children from her previous marriage, Tracy and Tim, and together they welcomed one child, Lawrence. Throughout their time together, Larry and Barbara built a life rooted in love, mutual respect, and a steadfast commitment that carried them through joys and challenges alike.

Larry completed his studies and graduated from Arizona State University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Finance. After graduation, he diligently studied for and passed the examination to become a licensed CPA. He landed his first job as an accountant for the Big Eight accounting firm Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., which launched his professional career in corporate finance. While climbing the ladder at Peat Marwick, the family moved back and forth between Phoenix and New York twice, with the final move to Phoenix taking place in 1979.

During the next three decades, while he and Barbara continued to raise their family, Larry worked in the finance industry at several other companies. One of them was the Maling Development Group, where he was privileged to work with his daughter Tracy for five years. During this period, he joined a recreational hockey league, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He played on a team with his son-in-law Mark, and it was there that he met Richard Schwartz. Richard and his wife, Sandy, became devoted lifelong friends of Larry and Barbara. The last company he worked for was Picerne Real Estate Group, which he joined in 1993. Shortly thereafter, Barbara's health began to decline. She endured two significant medical events, and Larry lovingly cared for her and remained continuously by her side until she heartbreakingly passed away in January 1997.

Larry met Arlene Ling later in 1997, and they were married in August of that year. She relocated from New Jersey to Arizona to be with Larry, and she enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. Arlene was a positive influence on Larry and on his relationships with his family members. During this period, Larry devoted significant time to his career and was promoted to Senior Vice President and Controller at Picerne. Quite sadly, Arlene became ill and died unexpectedly in February 2010.

In the spring of 2010, Larry met Rose Cancellieri, and they wed in March 2011. They enjoyed traveling and took several memorable trips, including multiple river cruises in Europe. They were also very active at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, where he served as a Pastoral Care Coordinator. Larry continued working at Picerne until his retirement in 2012. In retirement, Larry and Rose enjoyed playing pickleball and bridge. In late 2021, they amicably parted.

In the summer of 2022, Larry moved to a retirement community to be closer to his children.

While living at Thunderbird Senior Living community, he connected with Esther Robinson. He said that he noticed her from across the room on his first visit to the dining room. They became fast friends and enjoyed playing bridge and attending the symphony together.

Faith was a cornerstone of their life together, and each day they began and ended with prayer. They were married on Christmas Eve in 2022.

Tragically, Larry's son Lawrence passed away in October 2025. This unexpected and devastating loss deeply affected Larry, and Esther was by his side throughout the grieving process.

As Larry's health declined, Esther cared for Larry with tenderness and unwavering love. She did everything she could to ensure he received the best possible care right up to the moment he passed away.

Larry was predeceased by his father, Lawrence A. Schuman I; his mother, Grace Schuman; his son, Lawrence A. Schuman III; and his wives, Barbara Schuman and Arlene Schuman. He is survived by his wife, Esther Schuman; daughter, Tracy Lange (Mark); son, Tim Schuman (Karen); sisters, Lorraine Cecere and Grace Hopkins (Robert); grandchildren, Savannah Schuman (Zack Stevens), Rebecca Rich (Davis), Nick Lange, Ryan Schuman, and Olivia Schuman; and great granddaughter, Gwendolyn Rich.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, January 31, at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary at Bellevue Heights Church, 9440 W. Hutton Drive, Sun City, AZ 85351. In remembrance of Larry, whose beautiful blue eyes were as memorable as his spirit, the family invites attendees to wear blue-his favorite color-as a symbol of prayerful love and support for the Schuman family. A repast will follow at the church immediately after the service in the Chapel.
