Larry L. Sederberg
March 23, 1941 to May 29, 2024
Larry left us to be with his loving wife Maxine on May 29, 2024. Born Larry Leonard Sederberg in Shenandoah, Iowa on March 23, 1941 to Leonard and Helen Sederberg. Larry was the third and last child of the family, joining his two older sisters, Shirley and Beverly. The family moved away from Iowa at the end of WWII, settling in San Luis Obispo after a short stay in Arizona. Although they were far from rich (reportedly living in a house out in Cuesta Canyon with holes the roof), San Luis Obispo was a great place to grow up, and, Larry made the most of it. With his naturally gregarious personality, he made many lifelong friends, several of them in grammar school. Larry was athletic and loved all sports. He particularly excelled in track and Basketball. At about age 14 Larry began to drive cars, without permission. This marked the beginning of his love affair with cars and racing. His favorite automobile was the Corvette, of which he owned several during his life. Once, he reportedly drove his automobile up the stairway at San Luis Obispo High School, which did not impress the then Principal, Rusty Duval, who later became a friend for life.
Larry joined the Navy Reserve while in high school, and, in October 1960 reported to the Navy Receiving Station in San Francisco. He assumed active duty as a submarine electrician on the nuclear submarine the USS El Segundo in September 1962. Larry visited many ports of call in Asia during his service and had many amusing stories about his time on the USS El Segundo, which he told in private. His superiors spotted his talent on the trailing basketball court and he was selected to play basketball for the Navy for part of his service. Larry was released from active duty in February1962, and, finally received an Honorable Discharge from the US Navy on September 21, 1965.
Upon his return home, Larry went to work for Western Electric at the then new Pacific transcontinental communications underground terminal in Los Osos Valley. Life in San Luis Obispo was good for a 24 year old with a good job in those days. However, Larry's days of carefree bachelorhood were abruptly ended when he laid eyes on Maxine Souza at a Cal Poly dance. It was truly "love at first sight." He used to say, wistfully "I grabbed her hand and never let go." The two were married at Old Mission Church on April 24, 1965 and spent 58 wonderful years together until Maxine passed in 2023. After losing their first child, they raised two boys, Derek (born December 18, 1970), and, their adopted son Brian (born November 19, 1969).
Larry was very socially active during his life. He was a member of the Elks for many, many years. He was also a very active member of the Kiwanis Club of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, being awarded Kiwanian of the Year in 2008 "for outstanding service to club and community." Larry was also very active in his sons' lives, being a Y Indian Guides leader when they were very young, and then becoming the leader of the swine project for Edna 4H for well over 10 years (even after his sons had left the club.) Larry belonged to Native Sons and the American Legion. Larry was also active in Caballeros and participated in their yearly trail ride for many years. His last ride was the weekend before his death.
Larry loved taking the family waterskiing and snow skiing. While lake Nacimiento was their primary skiing location, the family frequently spent summer vacations at a resort in Clear Lake, California with family friends. While he was always a fisherman, later in life Larry developed an intense interest in Fly Fishing and joined a local Fly Fishing club. He was fascinated with fly fish hooks and spent innumerable hours "tying flies" when he was not out fishing.
During their marriage, Larry and Maxine also enjoyed international travel, visiting such places as New Zealand, China, and the Azores.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife Maxine, his parents Leonard and Helen, and his two sisters Shirley and Beverly. He is survived by his sons, Derek and Brian, and his grandchildren Aaliya and Mattias.
Funeral services will be held August 2, 2024, at Old Mission Catholic Cemetery on Bridge Street, San Luis Obispo. A celebration of life will be held at the Elks Club the following day, August 3, 2024 at 11:00 am. Attendees are invited to bring a dish to share if they wish.
