Larry William Stainback, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 22, 2023 at Duke University Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer. A native of Alamance County, he was born March 9, 1939 to the late James Thomas “Tommy” and Lena Bryant Stainback and was the husband of 28 years to the late Helen Marie Shanklin Stainback.
Larry played the piano at Webb Avenue Methodist Church, Piedmont Baptist Church and most recently, Pilgrim Chapel Baptist Church where he was a faithful member. He graduated from Williams High School in 1957 and retired from General Electric in Mebane after 30 years of service. Larry enjoyed spending time with his family and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his son, Mark Thomas Stainback of Burlington; daughter, Julie Stainback Cates and husband Gene of Graham; grandchildren, Melody Cates Soderlund and husband Nolan of Mebane, Zachary Thomas Cates of Hickory, Grant Thomas Stainback and Phillip Edward Cates and wife Ashley, both of Graham; great grandchildren, Cameron Edwards, Terri Cates, Phillip Cates, Jr. and Josslyn Cates. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a brother, James “Jimmy” Stainback.
A service to celebrate Larry’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, May 29, 2023 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. David Braddy with the burial at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4pm on Sunday at Lowe Funeral Home and other times at the home.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Duke Hospital, 7300 Duke North Floor for their wonderful and loving care shown to Larry during his stay.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Freedom Fellowship Church, 522 Trollinger St., Burlington, NC 27217.
