Mrs. Lata (Manda) Bhavikatti, age 77 and wife of late Mr. Prabhakar Bhavikatti passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 in Lexington, MA.
She was born on June 30, 1948 in the city of Dharwad, a small town in the state of Karnataka in India. She began her elementary education in Bombay because her father was practicing law in Bombay at the time. After her father moved to Bangalore to further his career as a lawyer, the entire family also moved to Bangalore. Lata, also known as Manda to close family and friends, continued her education at Baldwin All Girls School, a private Methodist school and graduated from Baldwins High School. She continued her undergraduate education in Bangalore in the area of Home Science and graduated with a gold medal in 1970.
Bangalore, also famously known as the garden city of India, is a lovely temperate place and their family of 7 (parents, older brother and 4 sisters including Lata) lived and settled there, building strong ties with each other and close relationships with their community. Her parents were strong believers in education and Lata was a very strong student academically. She was also equally good in sports, winning numerous awards in relay racing, track, high jump and long jump competitions.
She married her husband Prabhakar Bhavikatti in 1967. He was working in the Indian Defense Ordinance factories which manufactured guns, weapons and ammunitions for the Indian Army, Navy and Airforce. Because of his professional requirements, her family (including their children Madhu and Ashwin) got transferred to various different cities throughout India. Madhu and Ashwin studied in many different schools and completed their education.
Lata was a devoted wife to her husband and took active part in the WWA (Women's Welfare Association) everywhere her husband was transferred. She was the President of WWA for a period of 10-15 years. She and Prabhakar raised Madhu and Ashwin with lots of love and eventually played a significant role in interacting with their four grandchildren.
After Prabhakar passed away in 2018 and Lata moved to the United States, she developed a number of health problems and particularly was struggling with dementia, kidney and heart respiratory problems, which finally took her life.
Lata had a very energetic personality and was very giving and very positively oriented in her outlook. She loved arts and crafts and cooking and baking and chit chatting with family and friends. Lata was also an extraordinary homemaker par excellence.
She is survived by her three sisters: Jaya Pavate, Dr. Shailaja Sundaresh and Veena Bhupali, and her two children, Madhu and Ashwin. Lata and Prabhakar always loved their two granddaughters Neha and Priya and their two grandsons Nithin and Neil.
Private funeral services and cremation were held on November 28, 2025.
Arrangements are entrusted to Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
