Laura Lynn Childes was born January 10, 1962 in Anderson, Indiana to David and Judy Brown. She was raised with her younger brother David in Indiana. As a young woman, Laura was known for her infectious joy, kindness, beauty, and easy sense of humor. She was an active student at Madison Heights High School, enjoyed music, played multiple sports including tennis and basketball, and was crowned homecoming queen in 1980.

She attended nursing school at Anderson University, where she played varsity tennis and was nursing student of the year in 1981. She received her nursing degree from Anderson University, followed by a masters degree as a Nurse Practitioner at Indiana University.

Laura met the love of her life, Jeffrey Childes, early in life while in junior high school. They fell in love at university and were wed on May 22, 1982. They were blessed with 6 children and created a home environment characterized by the love of the Lord, constant hospitality, music, education, and great joy. Laura homeschooled all 6 of her children and showed a constant dedication and perseverance to their success and well-being. She raised physicians, artists, entrepreneurs, a pastor, daughters who followed her footsteps in nursing, and took great pride in their successes.

Tragically, in January 2012, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She underwent surgery and radiation, and although cured of her cancer, she suffered slow cognitive decline during the remainder of her life. Throughout her suffering, Laura demonstrated strong faith in her Lord and a supernatural peace and joy despite her circumstances. Her strength and disposition were an encouragement to those around her.

On September 7, 2025, Laura went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by family, the hymns that she loved, and prayer. Laura is survived by her brother, Dr. David Brown, her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Childes, her 6 children and their spouses - Kristen and Brad Hartman, Mariel and Trevor Harding, Ben and Kaitlyn Childes, Jon and Angelica Childes, Emily and David Schermers, Daniel and Emily Childes, as well as 16 grandchildren.

"So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal."

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

So sorry to have seen this, however I know she is with her Lord and Savior in Heaven.
I had the pleasure of assisting her through a company Jeff hired. I saw her decline, the struggle Jeff had when he had to make the decision to move her to Assisted Living.
What a wonderful Godly couple and I will ALWAYS remember Dr. Childes as a loving caring husband who was there for the many years of her illness and NOT giving up on her.

Laura left an amazing legacy with lives she touched sharing her love for the Lord. As one of my best childhood friends, she helped me to a personal relationship with Christ. A particular special memory was the youth trip to "Jesus `78" festival in the PA mountains. I remember a spark between Jeff and Laura on that trip that would blossom into a beautiful marriage. I trust that God will hold your family close in your grief. I´m so sorry for your loss! Sending love from TN. (Here is a fun pic of when we got to get together before you moved from Indiana)
In His love, Sue Ellen (Jessup) Easterday

May the Lord hold you all close during this difficult time of loss. Laura´s love poured out from Jesus´s love in her. May you always receive the deep love of Christ. With love, Linda Kitchen

Laura was one of the most gracious, loving ladies I've known. She was so pleasant to be with. And Jeff was so attentive & loving with her. It has been my privilege to know this godly couple. And their children...likewise.

I got to know Laura through the Belarus ministry at North Hills Church. She was always so kind to me and radiated such joy. Even after her surgery, when I would see her, she was so sweet, handling her challenges with such grace. She will be missed!

Childes family-
It´s been a long hard goodbye, and you have loved Laura well. It was a privilege to witness your faithfulness... and hers!
Even though I didn´t know the Laura you have been grieving and missing for so long-before the ravages of cancer, her love and devotion to Jesus and to you shone through clearly to me in my interactions with her over the past several years. At one of my last visits I was reading "The Secret Garden" to Laura, and one of the characters in the story was overwhelmed by the beauty and magic of nature and spontaneously began to sing the doxology... at which point Laura perked up and chimed in. I am rejoicing that Laura is experiencing the ultimate beauty of being in God´s presence where there is fulness of joy... and very likely singing a new special doxology all her own. I´m praying
that God will continue to meet each of you at whatever place of grief you find yourself today, and bring you special confirmations that He is very present.
With gratitude for her well lived life,
Cindy Williams

Sometimes when someone passes others have to think of something sweet to say. This is the exact opposite of how it is with Laura.

I´m so very thankful for my friendship with you Laura. You really loved your family and loved to tell me updates on everyone!! I loved your Grammy name Mimsi and how you got the Mimsi special at Tandem, your favorite restaurant! We were sisters in Christ and you encouraged me so many times with Scripture, Biblical truth and reminders of God´s amazing love and promises! You had the kindest heart which broke over what God´s heart breaks over. You saw the good in others and extended grace and mercy as God had given to you! You had a great sense of humor and I´ll treasure the memories of our laughs together...especially in the pool as we exercised...except when I splashed you by accident! That was NOT funny! Thank you for being my friend and sister in Christ ... I am sad to say goodbye for now but know you are whole and full of joy in Heaven.

Jeff and all your children and grandchildren you are all so special!! A big family that loves Jesus and one another! You loved your wife and mom and Mimsi so well!!! I have been praying and will continue to pray that our God of all comfort will comfort you as you remember and grieve your great loss! God bless you all!!

Love in Jesus
Sandy
