It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Laura A. Merker, who left us peacefully on July 23, 2025, at the age of 83, surrounded by her loving family. A woman of remarkable spirit, creativity, and generosity, Laura touched the lives of many through her unwavering kindness and zest for life.
Laura is survived by her children, daughter Karen Kraut and husband Kenneth, and son John Merker and wife Laura; her grandchildren, Ashley Affrunti and husband Brett, Amanda Merker, Stephanie Kraut, Lauren Chandler and husband Ryan, Alexa Merker, and Alliana Merker; and great grandchildren Kyla, Kasen, Willow, and Nolan. Laura is predeceased by her parents, mother Anna Gilbert, father John Williams, and step father John Gilbert; her sisters Anita Wares and husband James, Harriet McLaughlin and husband Patrick, and Lorraine DesBiens and husband Rusty; and her brother John Williams.
Laura was born in Hoboken, New Jersey on June 2, 1942. She grew up in Jersey City and later moved to Atlantic Highlands, where she raised her son and daughter. She moved to Florida where she was a dedicated public servant for many years, working for Martin and Alachua Counties as an Administrative Assistant. Upon retirement, she moved back to New Jersey to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Laura was a devoted longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW and held many leadership positions, including Chaplain in more recent years. She was a longtime Parishioner of Faith Chapel in Union Beach. She also volunteered for many years with the food pantry.
A master of crochet, she could often be found with a needle in hand, crafting beautiful pieces for family, friends, and those in need. Never one to shy away from an adventure, Laura embraced life with a sense of curiosity and excitement. Whether it was cheering on her beloved New York Giants and Mets, enjoying the soothing waves at the beach, baking with her family, or tackling a new puzzle, she made the most of every moment. Her heart was as big as her many hobbies. A devoted volunteer, Laura was passionate about giving back to her community, always lending a hand wherever needed. A committed Christian, her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her to live with grace, compassion, and love for others.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, joy, and a passion for helping others. Laura will be missed dearly by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Visitation and funeral services will be held Monday, July 28, 2025, 4:00pm-8:00pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road,
Middletown, NJ.
