Obituary published on Legacy.com by Grace Funeral Chapels - Lauderhill on Jan. 30, 2026.
Laurel Patricia Wiltshire was born in Brontie, Manchester, Jamaica. She was a beloved mother, faithful servant of the Lord, and a light to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She entered eternal rest on January 25, 2026, in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, surrounded by love of family and carried by grace.
A woman defined by love and selflessness; Laurel gave freely of herself to everyone she encountered. Her heart was generous, her spirit gentle, and her life a living testimony of faith. She loved the Lord deeply, and her walk with Him shaped every part of who she was. Through her words, her actions, and her unwavering kindness, she reflected God's love in ways that left a lasting impression on all who encountered her.
Laurel possessed a remarkable wealth of wisdom. Whether through quiet conversation or heartfelt guidance, she shared insight, encouragement, and understanding with anyone who needed it. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen, valued, and heard.
Professionally, Laurel first worked as a Pharmacy Assistant at the then Bailey's Drugstore in Christiana where she met and subsequently married Sylvin Newman Snr. She then worked as a librarian with the Jamaica Library Service, and served at the Mandeville and Christiana locations where her love for knowledge and learning allowed her to nurture young minds. Laurel found great joy in counseling young people, nurturing their curiosity, and helping them discover their potential. Later, answering a higher calling of care and compassion she immersed herself into the scriptures, and often shared the word as an Evangelist and Lay Preacher in her home church, Chudleigh Restored Pentecostal.
Laurel later migrated to the United States of America where she became a Certified Nursing Assistant. In this role, she poured out her heart through service, tending to others with patience, dignity and genuine love, whilst treating every person as though they were family.
Above all else, Laurel cherished her role as a mother. Her love was unconditional, her sacrifices countless, and her devotion unwavering. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, wisdom, resilience and love.
Laurel is survived by her four children, Sherna, Carol (Joan), Delrose and Selvin Newman Jr., Sons-in-love – Donovan and Courtney, Daughter-in-love – Ana, Grand Children – Jodi-Kaye, Kimberly, Carlson, Courtnegail, Chaniel, Zoe, Max, and Milan, siblings Agatha (Gloria), Audley (Roy), nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Though she will be deeply missed, we rejoice in knowing that she now rests in the arms of her Savior, hearing the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
Mom, we love you! Your legacy of love and Christian devotion will forever be etched in our hearts and minds.
Sleep in eternal peace Mother Dear and may God's perpetual light shine on you always!!!
