Laurie Jean (Radke) Maidl, 63, of Rochester, MN departed this world on January 22, 2024, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Our hearts are eternally broken from losing her, but we remain inspired by the way she lived.
Laurie was born on October 1, 1960, to Larry and Donna Radke of Minnesota Lake, MN. Her formative years were spent on the family farm with her beloved siblings, and stories of their antics will keep her close to our hearts. She graduated from Minnesota Lake High School and moved to Rochester. There, she earned her RN degree from Rochester Community College and her BSN from Winona State University. Even before completing her RN degree, she began her career at the Mayo Clinic as a nursing assistant, marking the beginning of 44 years of dedicated service at Mayo. For the last 36 years, she worked as a Wound/Ostomy/Continence nurse, where she was a leader at Mayo. Laurie mentored many of her coworkers and helped establish a WOC certification course at Winona State University. She took great pride in her role as a nurse and was highly respected among patients, fellow nurses, and doctors.
On September 10, 1983, Laurie married Daniel Maidl in Minnesota Lake, MN, embarking on 40 years of adventures. They were blessed with three children - Derrick, Elizabeth, and Kaitlyn - whom she loved unconditionally, supporting them in every endeavor. While their early years were spent in the chaos of rushing between sporting events, the purchase of a family cabin on Woman Lake in recent years provided a serene space for Laurie, Dan, and their children to create lasting memories.
Laurie's life overflowed with love from family and friends. Known as "Auntie Laurie," she took her role as the planner seriously, always the first to arrive and last to leave any event. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, and tending to her yard. She found a second family at Hosanna Lutheran Church, where she formed deep connections and served her faith community in various roles. Laurie embodied humility, compassion, kindness, and love. To say that we will miss her greatly would be an understatement.
She is survived by her husband, Dan; children - Derrick (Jess), Liz, and Kaitlyn (Blake); her first grandchild, Baby M. - due any day; her parents, Larry and Donna Radke; her siblings - Scott (Jan) Radke, Linda (Oz) Osmundson, Brenda (Tim) Plummer, and Steve (Sheila Michels) Radke; and many beloved nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister, Gail Lynn Radke; her in-laws, Glen and Ione Maidl, and her aunt, Violet Grunzke.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27th, at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Rochester, MN. Visitation will start at 12pm and the service will begin at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the WOCN Foundation for the Fund the Future scholarship program (https://foundation.wocn.org/).
