LaVerna Catherine (Pietz) Magstadt was born on May 22, 1946, to Carl and Sophia (Bertsch) Pietz in Parkston, South Dakota. She graduated from Parkston High School in 1964. In May of 1966, LaVerna completed a 2-year curriculum for Elementary Education from Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD. On November 5, 1966, she united in marriage to Darrell Magstadt in Tripp, South Dakota. In 1970, LaVerna went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Education from Southern State College in Springfield, SD. She initially taught at a country school, and later taught elementary in Tripp, SD. After having children, LaVerna semi-retired from teaching to care for her sons and help manage the farm in the Tripp area. She enjoyed substitute teaching in Scotland and Tripp schools for many years. In 2012, the couple retired from farming and made their home in Yankton in 2017.
LaVerna loved baking/giving out cookies, was always gardening and planting flowers, and was greatly involved in her community and her church. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved family, spending time with her sisters (and brothers), her many nieces and nephews and their families. Her sons were her pride and joy. Later in life, thanks to her wonderful daughters-in-law Jody and Katie, her greatest treasure were her grandchildren. She loved them so much.
LaVerna is survived and remembered by her sons: Corey (Kate) Magstadt, and Chad (Jody) Magstadt; grandchildren: Alanna, Aidan, and Oliver Magstadt; siblings: Leona Baltzer, Violet Fuerst, Elmer Pietz, Vilo Pietz, Verlin Pietz, Vernetta Smith, Mary Thrift, Donald Pietz, and Carol Stoakes.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Darrell Magstadt, her parents, and her siblings: Herbert Pietz, Viola Zobel, and Bob Pietz.
