Lawrence Bumstead Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapels - Coon Rapids on Mar. 2, 2026.
Lawrence Raymond Bumstead, 79, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 28, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on May 25, 1946, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Lawrence was the beloved son of Clyde and Annie Bumstead. He was raised in Allen Park, Michigan, where he graduated from Melvindale High School. Known to many as "Larry," he carried with him a strong work ethic, quiet strength, and deep devotion to family throughout his life.

In 1967, Larry enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country with honor and dedication. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to serving others through his civilian career. He worked at Kincheloe Air Force Base before joining the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Larry dedicated many years there and retired in 2015 as an Assistant Lock Master. His career reflected his reliability, leadership, and steadfast commitment.

Above all, Larry's greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne (Kibble) of fifty-five years; his daughter, Wendy (Bumstead) Traffie, and son-in-law, Dana; and his three grandchildren, Randy, Torri, and Noah, who were truly the pride of his life. He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl (Bumstead) Johnson, and brother-in-law, Brent and sister-in-law, Polly (Kibble) Ross.

Larry enjoyed the quiet sanctity of his home and took great pride in maintaining a beautifully landscaped yard. He had a deep love of animals and found joy in their companionship. He also cherished the brotherhood he shared with the members of Vietnam Veterans Chapter 180. Through this fellowship, Larry built lifelong friendships and enjoyed many camping trips, events, and fundraisers that supported local veterans and their families.

Larry will be remembered for his integrity, his quiet strength, and the unwavering love and steady support he gave to those around him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished so deeply and in the many lives he touched through friendship and service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Annie Bumstead.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the entire team at Ecumen North Branch and Ecumen Hospice for the compassionate, attentive care they gave Larry and the unwavering support they provided to his family.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 7, 2026, from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Washburn - McReavy Funeral Home at 1827 Coon Rapids Blvd NW in Coon Rapids, MN. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. A luncheon will follow immediately after at the VFW at 1919 Coon Rapids Blvd NW Coon Rapids, MN 55433.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Ecumen Hospice or to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 180 of Sault Ste Marie, Michigan.
