He graduated from basic training at the USCG Receiving Center in Cape May, New Jersey and was assigned aboard the USCGC Mackinaw, based in the cold icy waters of Cheboygan, in northern Michigan. He then transferred to the USCGC Yamacraw where he spent an enjoyable month laying submarine detection cable on the sea floor around the entire perimeter of Bermuda.
In August 1952, he graduated as an Engineman from the USCG Training Station in Groton, Connecticut, and served the rest of his enlistment in charge of the engine room on the USCGC Sorrel, and briefly on the USCGC Unimak, both based in Boston. Buddy and his wife Annette were married while he was stationed in Boston, and after his discharge the GI Bill helped him earn a degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University. Over the years, he enjoyed a varied career in engineering, with welcome opportunities to continuously learn new things in many countries around the world including Europe and Hong Kong.
In his free time, Buddy spent his summers camping and boating with his wife and five children. When he wasn't fishing, he was towing his kids around the lake on water skis. In addition to fishing, he enjoyed pulling up lobster traps and taking his kids and grandchildren out digging for clams and quahogs. Winter months were spent on the ski slopes. He was o ered a cabin in Vermont, took his family to Okemo Mountain and enrolled all his kids in ski school. After that, the family spent many winters skiing in the mountains of VT and NH. As his grandchildren grew older, he then taught them how to ski.
