Christmas enchiladas. My family will always remember the special enchiladas made by Isabel and brought over by Larry at Christmastime. It was an absolute pleasure and honor to have been their neighbor for two decades on West 5th Street in VC. I realize this is a memory page for Larry, but to say Larry without also saying "and Isabel" just doesn't sound right.
Larry and Isabel were the best of people. Larry and I talked quite often over his white fence. Sometimes I would chat with both of them while on their front porch enjoying a warm summer evening. As good neighbors do, when one of us needed something the other would be there to help. From a wheelbarrow to a volleyball net to some electricity after the ice storm of 2005, Larry and I could count on each other when the time came.
When I returned to college Larry and Isabel were both quite gracious when I asked for help with a "local history" assignment for a writing class. The result was a warm and often funny reminiscing of Larry's days growing up in Salina, KS, watching the activities at the POW camp during WWII and "shooing rabbits." Thanks for the "A" you two.
Larry and Isabel were a very large part of our lives there on 5th Street. By their example I hope my children learned lessons in graciousness, respect and responsibility as well as kindness and caring for others. Larry and Isabel were all that and more. I know I learned a few lessons.
Sometimes you get lucky in who you sit next to in life. We did. Thank you Larry and Isabel.
Rest easy now Larry. We'll put your walking shoes away.
