Lawrence “Larry” E. Nigbur, 88, Wausau, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at Aspirus Hospice House, Wausau.
He was born December 18, 1936 in Wausau, son of the late William and Doris (Tryba) Nigbur. On November 5, 1960, he married Beverly Wegner at St. John Catholic Church in Antigo. She survives.
Larry was a graduate of Wausau High School, class of 1954. He then joined the United States Air Force, serving four years as a member of the Military Police.
Larry began his working years at Weichman’s Hardware Store and later became the manager of Weltman’s Furniture in downtown Wausau. In 1977, he purchased the furniture store which he ran for 4 years as Larry Nigbur’s Weltman Furniture until moving to the Northwest side of Wausau. He opened the new store as Nigbur’s Fine Furniture and worked until his retirement in 1999.
Larry was an avid bowler at several Wausau area bowling alleys, even achieving “300” games. Later he enjoyed golf and became a member of Greenwood Hills Country Club. He even golfed a “hole-in-one” at Trapp River and Greenwood Hills.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly; his daughter, Linda (Jim Zajdel) Nigbur; his granddaughter, Taylor (Ian Hunt) Zahrt; three siblings, Wally (Jean) Nigbur, Connie Stanke and Jan Kreibich; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, William “Bill” (Margaret) Nigbur, Caroline (David) Pieper and Lucille “Lucy” (Howard) Lunt; and brother-in-law, Pete Stanke.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Noon on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at St Anne Catholic Church, Wausau. Rev. Tom Lindner will preside. Visitation will be on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the church. Entombment will be in the Holy Angels Mausoleum at St. Michael Cemetery, Wausau, with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 10, Wausau. There will be a celebration of life following the entombment at Green Hills Country Club, 2002 Poplar Lane, Wausau, WI 54403.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Anne Catholic Church or Aspirus Hospice House, Wausau.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff on the Palliative Care Unit at Aspirus Wausau Hospital and the staff at Aspirus Hospice House for the wonderful care and support you extended to Larry and our family.
