Obituary of Lawrence Love Jr.
Everything in the universe has a rhythm, everything dances." –Maya Angelou
Lawrence "Moyo" Love Jr. made his own rhythm, and the world danced to it. His life story began in Denver, Colorado, on November 24, 1950. Moyo attended Whittier Elementary, Smiley Jr. High School, and George Washington High School. He graduated from Metropolitan State University with a bachelor's degree in economics. He worked at the Yellow Cab Company for ten years, where he met his lifelong love, Verna, in 1973. They married on February 15, 1975.
Moyo was a revolutionary and civil rights activist and, above all, a fighter for justice. While at Metro, he worked as an educator and organizer for SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and began connecting with like-minded individuals such as Stokely Carmichael and Russell Means. He eventually joined the All African Peoples' Revolutionary Party (AAPRP), learning pan-Africanist teachings. Moyo was always up for discussing politics and current events in his spare time. His speaking style conveyed his thoughtfulness, respect, and genuine love for humanity. He also loved to play bid whist and dominoes with friends.
In the early 1980s, Moyo discovered a love for reggae music. He was a founding member of Colorado's original reggae band, I-n-I Redemption. He continued to play with other bands like the I-gyptians. Additionally, Moyo toured the country with the Tony Brown Band. He also toured with the USO sharing his love of reggae and Afro-centric music with the world. As a well-known expert piano tuner technician, Moyo tuned pianos for Ramsey Lewis, Bob Marley, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and many other famous musicians.
Moyo transitioned peacefully on February 12, 2023. His parents, Lawrence Love Sr, Aileen Brewer, stepfather Riley Brewer, and brother George Love preceded him in death. His family and friends will forever cherish his memory:
Loving Wife – Verna Love (Walker), Siblings – Joanne Goering (Burl), Gregory Brewer (Beverly), Leslie "Rock" Brewer (Stephanie), and Miriam Goetzke. Nieces and nephews – Akira, Kevin, Ereka, Derek, Geovontai, Gabrielle, Robert, Alyssa, and Riley. – Grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and a host of close relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service for Moyo will be held at 10:30am, Friday, March 10, 2023 at People's Presbyterian Church, 2780 York Street, Denver, CO 80205
