Lawrence E., 90, of the Holland Christian Home in North Haledon, formerly of Wyckoff, died Friday, June 8, 2023 at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
Born in Penbrook, PA, a suburb of Harrisburg, in January 1933, he was the son of Russell and Katheryn Miller. In August 1959, he married the love of his life, Joan Elizabeth Schaffer, who survives. He is also survived by three children, Lydia Miller of Brookfield, WI, Christopher Miller of Nashua, NH and Curtis Miller and his wife Karen of Birmingham, MI. He was a devoted grandfather of five grandchildren, Cassandra, Griffin (Kimberly), Andrew, William and Roger.
Larry served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-54 on the USS Tarawa. He was a 1959 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a BA in Business Management where he also served as President of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. He worked for Mutual Life Insurance Company and then New York Life Insurance Company in New York City. He retired from New York Life as a Vice President in 1989.
Larry was a member of Old Paramus Reformed Church where he served as both a Deacon and an Elder and chaired multiple committees including the Stewardship and Operations Committees. He was a 9th grade Sunday school teacher and a sponsor of the Junior High Youth Group. During the 1998 fundraising campaign he was responsible for all RCA churches in the northeast U.S.
When not devoting his time to work or Old Paramus Reformed Church, Larry enjoyed family vacations to Florida, canoeing on New York lakes, and later in life trips to Europe with his wife, Joan. He also loved his post-retirement drive throughout the western United States to various national parks.
Family will receive friends on Saturday June 17, 2023 from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm with a funeral service starting at 2:00 pm at the Old Paramus Reformed Church at 660 East Glen Ave in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
