Layne Johnson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thompson - Larson Funeral Home, Minot on Mar. 20, 2026.
Layne Johnson, 71, of Minot, ND, passed away on March 18, 2026, at Trinity Nursing Home, with his family by his side.

Layne was born on February 13, 1955, in Camp Gordon, Georgia, to Dorothy (Weltikol) and Robert Johnson, and was raised in Minot, North Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church. His faith was important to him throughout his life.

Layne graduated from Minot High School in 1973, where he developed a strong passion for athletics. He participated in wrestling and track and field, excelling in pole vault. His dedication and talent led him to hold the state record in pole vault for several years.

Following high school, Layne attended North Dakota State University, where he continued his success in pole vaulting. He later completed his degree at Minot State University. His achievements in track and field earned him induction into the Hall of Fame at both Minot High School and Minot State University, an honor that reflected his hard work, perseverance, and love for the sport.

Layne enjoyed his work over the years in farming and construction, and he also spent several years driving a cement truck. He took pride in staying busy and working with his hands, always finding satisfaction in a hard day's work. When returning from his travels and adventures he always found peace on the North Dakota Plains. In his later years, he battled dementia with quiet strength.

Layne's love for athletics extended beyond track and field. He also enjoyed playing softball, rugby, and golf, always valuing the camaraderie and competition that came with each game. He had a passion for the great outdoors and always took any opportunity he could to go fishing.

Layne will be remembered as a man of few words, with a deep love for his family and friends. He had a kind and caring heart, always appreciated a good joke, and truly enjoyed spending time with those closest to him. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.

A special thanks to Trinity Homes and Hospice for all the compassion and care during his stay.

Survived by: his siblings, Shannon Johnson, Shari Johnson (CA), Christina (Lance) Haugen; nieces and nephews, Tani Machette (OR), Kendra (Mike) Neff, Levi Haugen, Cody Haugen, Jordan Felix, Alana Sepulveda (CA); and brother-in-law, Frank Machette.

Preceded in death by: his parents, Dorothy (Weltikol) and Robert Johnson; sister, Jane Machette; and brothers-in-law, Fred Felix and Rick Sepulveda.

Yesterday

So sorry to hear about Layne. When we would come to visit family from Va, Layne was always around and willing to do stuff with me and my 2 sisters. I remember he took me and I think my sisters to the North Dakota state fair and we saw Kenny Rodgers! He was always a quiet kind cousin! I will always have very fond memories of Layne and our times visiting family! Blessings for comfort and peace. Cassie
