Leigh Albert Wittig, a beloved figure in his community, passed away on December 18, 2025, at The Homeplace of Durand. Born on July 13, 1936, in Arkansaw, Wisconsin, Leigh lived a life marked by hard work, generosity, and a zest for connection with others.
A proud graduate of Arkansaw High School, Leigh initially embarked on a life of farming before dedicating twenty years to a fulfilling career as a Maintenance Mechanic at Dairyland Power. Upon retiring from Dairyland Power, he continued to stay active in his later years, taking on various part-time jobs, including a notable role as a custodian at Alma Area Schools. His work ethic was only rivaled by his passion for community and dedication to the people around him.
Leigh was known for his warm personality, relishing the opportunity to socialize, share jokes, and brighten the days of those he encountered. He had a special fondness for the natural beauty of his surroundings, often taking drives to appreciate the scenic landscapes and engage in conversations with both friends and acquaintances.
Fishing was one of Leigh's greatest pleasures, particularly on the Mississippi River and the lakes surrounding Cumberland, where he and his late wife Joan frequently enjoyed camping adventures together. He had an innate talent for gardening, generously sharing the fruits of his labor with co-workers and friends alike. Leigh always had the latest fishing report to share, embodying the spirit of camaraderie that defined his interactions.
Leigh is survived by four children, several grandchildren and one great-grandson, as well as two sisters; Greta (Jim) Barber and Lamoine (Kent) Keyline . His memory will be cherished by many friends in the area and especially by the wonderful caretakers at The Homeplace of Durand, who provided him with comfort and care in his later years.
A private graveside service will be held at the Nelson Cemetery in the Spring of 2026.
