Lela Mae Johnson was born on September 14,1933 in Angleton, TX to Alec Johnson &
Martha Marie Johnson. The world welcomed a true force of joy and exuberance in the
form of Lela Mae. She gave her life to Christ at an early age at First Baptist Church of
Angleton, TX. Her infectious laughter, warm smile, and vibrant spirit would touch the
lives of many, leaving a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to know
her. Sadly, on August 08, 2023, Lela embarked on her next journey, leaving behind
cherished memories that will forever remain etched in our hearts.
Lela was preceded in death by her father Alec Johnson, Mother Martha Marie
Johnson, Husband Jimmie Daniels, as well as her siblings. brother Oscar B. Johnson
of Houston, TX, sister of Oakland, CA. Ann M Jones, and lastly sister Gloria Jean
Owens of Houston, TX. Their spirits undoubtedly welcomed her with open arms, as
Lela always held a special place in her heart for her family.
She leaves behind a trail of love and laughter, forever imprinted in the hearts of those
she loved and those who loved her. Survived by her Children Rhonda Faye, Regina
Kaye, Keith Earl (Evonia), Candace Dianne, Tina Marie (Richie). 6 Grandchildren, Holli
(Colas), Jassmyn, Blue, Cierra, Juston (Trish) & Dylan. 5 Greatgrandchildren Tyrra
(Phil), Chace, Jersye, Juston Jr. & Jaiden. Lela took pride in being called Mamaw by
her children & grandchildren She shared an unbreakable bond with some of her best
friend nurses from Prairie View A & M. Mrs. Frankie Dillard & Mrs. Nichols.
The love within her family knew no bounds, extending to a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins, other family & friends.
Lela was not only passionate about her family and friends but also dedicated herself to
education and career pursuits. Graduating from Angleton's Marshall High School
Class of 1952. She embodied a spirit of perseverance. Pursuing higher education,
Lela attended Prairie View A & M College of Nursing obtaining a Registered Nurse
Degree in 1956. Alongside her academic endeavors, she was an invaluable employee
at the Veterans Hospital, U.S. Public Health and she also found fulfillment while
working at T.S.U. Health Clinic.
Her heart was devoted to her family, friends, community & church. Lela also sung in
the choir for many years at University Christian Church until her health failed.
As we come together to celebrate Lela's life, let us remember her not with tears of
sorrow but with laughter and fond memories. She lived life to the fullest, embracing
every moment with an unwavering spirit that encouraged us all to do the same. Lela's
legacy lives on through the love she shared, the joy she brought, and the inspiration
she instilled. As Lela would have wanted, let's pay tribute to her exuberant spirit. Let us
gather to commemorate her life in the most befitting way - with love, laughter, and a
celebration of the beautiful soul that she was, because in her words. "that's just the
bottom line.
