Obituary
Ms. Lela L. Davis was born October 11, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Thomas and Lela Davis.
As a kid Lela loved music. Her favorite genres of music were Gospel and Jazz. She would spend her free time playing her records and dancing. She also loved to dance. Lela also spent a lot of time drawing. She was very artistic and would later become the first black woman to draw cartoons for the comic strip in the Indianapolis Star Newspaper.
Lela attended school #87 and Crispus Attucks High School where she met lifelong friends that later started a committee that would host matinees and large picnics for the community known as the Old Northside Reunion which was created to remember the history of their days when Northwestern which is now known as Dr. Martin Luther King Avenue was the Northside of the Westside of town for African Americans they had one high-school and one elementary school that by blacks could attend.
Lela had a way of bringing people together. She was the center of the Davis family. She was fun, she had an infectious sense of humor, she was a great cook, and her door was always open. Her favorite holidays were Thanksgiving and Christmas. The whole family would gather at her home where everyone was guaranteed a meal and a gift under her Christmas tree. Lela had the biggest heart for others. She not only raised her children, but shortly after retiring from LaRue D. Carter Memorial Hospital, she continued her life calling caring for many generations of children after. She loved to shop for others, and she enjoyed going to see plays and live shows with family and friends. Lela was a huge family person, and she loved her family dearly.
Ms. Lela L. Davis departed this life on August 22, 2023 at the age of eighty-two years old. Lela was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Lela Davis; six siblings, Tommy Davis, William Davis, James Howard Davis, Jerry Davis, Herbert Davis, and Gary Davis; her son, Michael D. Davi; granddaughters, Quiana Randle and Sherell Davis.
She leaves a loving legacy to her children Peggy Davis, Albert Randle, Vivian Bell, Kenneth Davis, Steve Davis, Yvette Davis Williamson, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She will be loved and missed by a host of family and friends. She was a very special person, and every letter of her name described the person that she was.
