Today I´m remembering my Aunt Lena.
She was one of the strongest people in our family. Growing up we always joked, "Don´t mess with Aunt Lena," because everyone had a story about seeing her stand up for the people she loved. Truth is, it wasn´t really a joke. She was a protector.
When my mom needed someone, Aunt Lena was always there. She came from North Carolina to Connecticut to help take care of our family during one of the hardest times of our lives. I will always be grateful for that.
She also looked out for me when I was growing up. I remember at my grandmother´s funeral I was standing there nervous with my hands in my pockets. Aunt Lena leaned over and reminded me to take my hands out of my pockets, then quietly put her arm around me because she knew I was nervous. That was her. Strong, but always watching over the people she loved.
I´ll never forget taking her to lunch by the water in New Haven, a place my mom loved. We sat there watching the white seagulls and sharing stories about my mom, laughing in the middle of a difficult time.
Another time I sent her gingersnap cookies because they were my mom´s favorite. She, my mom, and Aunt Helen used to eat them with cheddar cheese. She called me laughing and was so excited when they arrived. Moments like that meant a lot to me.
Aunt Lena left an impact on all of our lives. She made people feel safe, and she loved her family deeply.
Sending my love and deepest condolences to her daughters Jewel, Samantha, and Peaches, her son Jimmy Jr., and to all her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Your mom was truly special and will always be remembered with love.
