Leon James Strong

Leon James Strong, a cherished member of his community and a devoted family man, passed away on January 5, 2026, at the age of 88. Leon was born on March 3, 1937, in Wheeler, Michigan, the son of the late Orlin James Strong and Beatrice Eileen (Swarthout) Strong. Leon led a life characterized by hard work, deep family ties, and a passion for the outdoors.

Leon dedicated 34 years of his career to Dow Chemical as a fitter and welder. His commitment to his work was a testament to his character and work ethic, and he proudly retired from the company.

A man of faith, Leon was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where he found community and connection. His enthusiasm for the outdoors was evident through his memberships in the Merrill Broadhead Archery Club, Saginaw Field and Stream, the NRA, and the Saginaw Valley Radio Control Club. Leon enjoyed many hobbies, including bow and rifle hunting and fishing, which he often pursued with family and friends. He also had a love for playing euchre, reading, and gardening, showcasing his well-rounded character and joyful approach to life. In addition to these pursuits, Leon proudly embraced his roots as a farmer, nurturing the land.

Leon is survived by his children, Lynae (Mark) Carson, Michelle (Jeff) Steed, Michael Strong, and Paulette (Troy) Bell. He was a loving grandfather to Derek DeVerney, Daryl (Tonya) DeVerney, Norman (Tonya) Conklin, Stacey Bell, Troy Bell, and Daniel (Danielle) Bell. Additionally, he treasured his great-grandchildren, Terian, Delaney, River, Rocky, Madison, Lilith, and Kurt, bringing immense joy to his life. He is also remembered fondly by his uncle, Gus (Cheri) Swarthout, and numerous nieces and nephews, whose lives he touched deeply.

Leon is preceded in death by his parents, Orlin James Strong and Beatrice Eileen (Swarthout) Strong; step-mother Frances Strong; his beloved wife, Barbara Strong, whom he married on April 12, 1958; and his two brothers, Roger and Gary Strong.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in the spring. Leon will be laid to rest with his wife Barbara in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Merrill.
