Mrs. Leona Mae “Mamie” Cartwright, 88, of Americus, passed away on December 6, 2025, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be held at Plains Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at 2:00PM with Rev. Buck Kinney officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Cartwright was born in Jack County, TX to Lewis Vestelle and Oleta Mae Ramzy Sartain. She was a devoted member of Plains Baptist Church where she loved being involved in many things but mostly anything involving children. Mrs. Cartwright loved to tell people about Jesus and prayed for everyone. She was a teacher for many years, having helped found Brooklyn Heights Christian School, and in many other capacities before her retirement from Georgia Southwestern State University, so she could homeschool her grandchildren. In the later years, she enjoyed being on the family farm working with the horses and spending time with her daughter and grandchildren. Mrs. Cartwright gave the best hugs and was a truly loving person. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jake Cartwright and a brother, Robert Lewis Sartain.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Colette and Greg Long of Americus; three grandchildren, Jessica Byrd and her husband, Jay of Americus, Nate Long and his wife, Gabby of Tempe, AZ and Samantha Long and her beau, Wes Gibbs of Americus; two sisters, Lois Marie Sartain Rensink and Letta Nell Sartain Biebighauser, both of Graham, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Plains Baptist Church, Vacation Bible School fund, PO Box 189, Plains, GA 31780.
