Leonard Carl Massey was born on June 23, 1937  in Ore City, Texas and passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026. Carl graduated from Commerce High School in Commerce, Texas in 1955. He proudly served the City of Greenville, Texas as a fireman and ambulance driver from 1961 – 1981 when he retired. For the remainder of his life, he proudly wore his Retired Fireman cap daily. After retiring from the City of Greenville, he went to work for Hunt County and was there another 20 years and retired from there as well.

He enjoyed reading western and sci-fi novels and watching sci-fi movies. He enjoyed target practice and teaching his daughter’s how to shoot. In his youth, he was in a family band with his siblings and performed on the radio. He also enjoyed playing his old records. He was a member of Old Concord Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir and joined a group with the church that traveled to various churches and performed gospel music.

Carl married Barbara Thompson, on June 7, 1957, and they were proudly married until his death.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara of Greenville, and daughter, Tammy McKenzie of Point. He was also a proud grandfather and is survived by granddaughters Tabatha Beal and husband Aaron of Lindale, Courtney Jacobus and husband Brad of Wolfe City, Tanya Hoggatt and husband Kase of Mabank and Michel Denton and husband Chris of Wolfe City, along with 11 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren and another one on the way. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Paul Lohr Massey, mother, Nellie Massey, sister Lois Hill, brother, Leo Massey, sister, Sue Coffman, daughter Dian Phinny and infant daughter, Carla Massey.

Flowers can be sent to Old Concord Baptist Church in Greenville, Texas on the day of the memorial. In lieu of flowers you can donate to your local volunteer fire department in his name.
