LeRoy Comes Last

Strong in Spirit, Gentle in Heart, Cowboy, Teacher, and Healer, LeRoy Gordon Comes Last, 80, of Poplar, Montana, began his journey to be with the Creator and his ancestors on October 27, 2025.

LeRoy was known across Indian Country for his deep connection with our Creator, horses, his rodeo skills, and his dedication to the Wellbriety Movement. He was a true cowboy at heart, raising and caring for bucking horses with pride and skill.

Beyond the ranch, LeRoy carried the strength, wisdom, and traditions of his people with deep pride. He was a respected historian and storyteller, dedicated to preserving as much as he could about our culture and its spiritual side. A devoted member of the Native American Church, LeRoy lived a life of prayer, humility, and purpose, integrating his faith and cultural teachings into everything he did. Through his guidance, stories, and teachings, he reminded others of the importance of remembering who we are, where we come from, and living in balance with the land, the Creator, and one another.

He was well known throughout all the reservations in the United States as well as in Canada, and he spent much of his life traveling to teach others the ways of our ancestors, sharing wisdom, tradition, and cultural guidance with countless individuals and communities.

LeRoy dedicated his life to helping others. Professionally, he worked as a counselor for Spotted Bull, in the judicial system supporting troubled youth, and as a supervisor at A&S, earning respect for his leadership, strong work ethic, and the care he showed to everyone around him. He also served as a domestic violence advocate and ran sweats for the BOA as well as for people in treatment, offering guidance, healing, and spiritual support. Additionally, he was an active member of the Mending Broken Hearts Wellbriety Movement.

He traveled widely and participated in rodeos throughout Indian Country, showcasing his skill, courage, and love for the traditions he held dear. LeRoy also shared his knowledge of horse teachings, passing on lessons of respect, patience, and connection to all who learned from him.

He also served his country as a veteran, carrying the same dedication, integrity, and quiet strength into every aspect of his life.

LeRoy’s presence was a blessing to his family, friends, and community. Those who knew him remember him as loving, kind, and caring, always ready with a story, a word of encouragement, or a smile that warmed the heart. His compassion and wisdom were a comfort to many, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

LeRoy is now lovingly reunited with his parents, Rena Taylor Comes Last and Daniel Comes Last Sr.; his sisters Pricilla (Bonnie), Gloria, and Eleanore; his “niece” Violet Comes Last; his brothers Malcom; his beloved late wife Tammy; his daughter LeRay; his children Gordon, Emerson, and Edison; and countless other cherished relatives whose spirits and memories he held close throughout his life.

LeRoy’s love and legacy live on through his wife, Sabrina; his daughters Amber Comes Last Yellow Owl, Kristi Comes Last Big Leggins, Rebecca Comes Last, Malissa Comes Last; and his sons Taylor Comes Last and Lucas Comes Last. He is also survived by his brother, Daniel Comes Last Jr.

LeRoy is lovingly remembered by the grandchildren he raised from birth—Ryan Comes Last, Kellee Comes Last Red Dog, Hunter Comes Last Pedraza, Lexus Comes Last, and Legacy Comes Last—as well as his granddaughters Nicole Comes Last, Iris Comes Last, Cheyenne Comes Last, Michaela Comes Last Viers, and Jacey Four Bear, as well as each of their siblings and children too many to name, all of whom held a special place in his heart. He is furthermore survived by many more grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, who will continue to carry his spirit, teachings, and love forward for generations to come.

As LeRoy’s spirit rides over the open skies, it watches over and rests in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who cherished him.

In honor of LeRoy, the family encourages acts of kindness, reflection, and gratitude—values he lived by every day. They also wish to bring awareness to dementia and the need for continued support, care, and education for those affected. His story serves as a reminder to show compassion to those who walk that path and to the caregivers who walk beside them.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a wake on December 4th at 7:00 PM, followed by services on December 5th at 11:00 AM, both to be held at the Poplar Cultural Center, as we honor a life well-lived and a spirit now at peace. He will be laid to rest on the Comes Last Family Ranch in Poplar.
