Leroy Roger Flaata, the son of Oscar and Adella (Knutson) Flaata, was born on August 11, 1936, in his home in Yellow Medicine Township. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in the class of 1955 in Sacred Heart, Minnesota.
Leroy met the love of his life, Janice Miller, on a blind date at a dance. They were married on April 5, 1958, in Belview, MN. They eventually relocated to St. James where they raised their family. Leroy was self-employed with Flaata Appliance and Refrigeration Repair and later moved to Lobster Lake in rural Garfield. Leroy constructed their cabin to a year-round home with help from family and friends, even with his limited vision, he could fix, build or assemble anything.
Later, Leroy and Janice wintered in Texas for 12 years before moving into the Village Co-Op where he was an active member and President for six years.
Leroy had a strong faith in God and a great love for his family. He’ll be mostly remembered for his sense of humor, which he had up to his very last day. He enjoyed fishing, wood carving, playing cards and most of all, his 4pm Happy Hour.
Leroy is survived by his wife, Janice Flaata of Alexandria; son, Tim (Val) Flaata of Blooming Prairie; daughter, Deb (Kyle) Nehowig of Clitherall; son, Greg (Gwen) Flaata of Garfield; grandchildren, Stacie (Brennen) Toquam of Claremont; Brittany (Adam) Henry of Blooming Prairie; Kacy (Ted) Hoffman of Duluth; Kody (Jordain) Nehowig of Mankato; Kohl (fiancé Kaitlyn) Nehowig of Mankato; Tiffaney (Nate) Farley of Blaine; Cassandra Flaata of Minneapolis; Taylor Flaata of Grand Forks; great grandchildren, Nolan and Brynlee Toquam, Gunnar Henry, Jett Thomas, Owen and Sawyer Nehowig and Niko Hoffman; brothers, Orlan (Kathy) Flaata and Ardie (Margie) Flaata; sisters-in-law, Carol Flaata, Marcene Flaata, Jan Anderson Flaata, brothers-in-law, Bruce Rudy and Mike (Alice) Miller.
