I was an Excutive Director at Knoedler & Co, for 4 years 1979-1983 and was a marketing/PR driver for Le Roy Neiman graphics.. even though they were sold primarily thru Hammer Galleries (then owned by Dr Armand Hammer.] LeRoy would come to Knoedler's posh conference room to do a ritual signing of his work...the rituals were a great bottle of expensive champagne, and a primo Cuban cigar. On one side of the long conference table would be a pile of unsigned Neiman serigraphs, an edition of say, 100 ..that cost (then) about $30,000 to produce at the art print house. But then we'd pass a sheet to LeRoy and he would sign it with his flourish, and boom!, that art print edition was now worth $250,00 and up.. it was like printing money. LeRoy was always fun-loving and we had some rollicking times, such as going thru Central Park in a Hansom Cab..filled with friends, and of course, Veuve Clicquot. LeRoy and I had many a fine art chat, either at his studio or out on the town in NYC. When I produced for Knoedler a catalogue raisonné on Art from The Hermitage that Dr Hammer had arranged to bring over from St. Petersberg, Russia, LeRoy was most complimentary about my book for the gallery, even though he was not involved in that art opus. I then produced for NBC TV, a 1/2hour special on this art "The Legacy of Leonardo"... and LeRoy and I began to spark about doing an art film/TV show of his work.. but a year slipped by and I subsequently
left Knoedler. He was a work of art! Adrian Butash, Santa Barbara CA, butash2@gmail,.com

The first time I saw Leroy Neiman was on the Merv Griffin show I was about sixteen most guest's sit and talk after all it is a talk show but forever the consumate proffessional he made a portrait drawing of "Merv" on the spot on camera and answered questions talking about his life and work before millions of veiwers cool as can be. That made me realize that a life in art was an exciting, noble, respectable and lucritive
Proffession. Years later I met Janet and Mr. Neiman at an art opening @ the French Embassy
they were a class act. Several times after that I had the ubiqitous good fortune to run into them on occassion. I have long admired his artistry, success proffessionalism "hutzpa" & his ageless timeless creation Femlin. A seemingly tierless prolific one man industry I wish I had known him better, The soul of the artist burns eternal ever present and with generations to come. He left his mark on an era.
God Bless & keep you both.

I have been a fan of Mr. Neiman's art for over 40 years. I got up the courage to call his studio about twenty years ago and was talking with a nice gentleman about Mr. Neiman's art and how much I was drawn to it and how it started my interest in painting. At the end of the 25 minute conversation I asked what his name was and he humbly said he was Leroy. I nearly dropped the phone. What a wonderful Man, Artist, and American he was! God Bless him! I have fond memories from 1975 of trying to convince Leroy Neiman that it would be a good idea for me to drive a van loaded with his paintings from NYC back to Saint Paul for a hometown exhibition. He was somewhat skeptical but he did very generously risk his treasures and we have not forgotten! Our condolences to all.

I first saw LeRoy's art back in the sixties. I was amazed and inspired. LeRoy Neiman's creative and passionate paintings kept me on the path of becoming an artist. We never met but he has always been present in spirit each time i picked up my brushes. LeRoy's parting shocked me and hurt my heart. I know that his studio is now flooded with Divine Light. My prayers are with his family and the spirit of LeRoy's genius will be with me all of my life.

MY MENTOR, MY TEACHER, MY FRIEND
He determined my future, my career, my life. I owe it all to him. He not only taught me how to draw, what to draw, and how to sell and market it, tho I was never as successful as he was. For all that flamboyant personna he projected, he was a very honest and incredible draftsman and lovable personality. LeRoy, you will always be the very special and influential part of my life.
Janet, I posted this on Facebook on the SAIC notice.
My heart goes out to you.... I know what the past few weeks must've been for you. My prayers are with you and I will call you next week.

I organized several lunches for LeRoy at Moose's on his San Francisco visits to his gallery here, the Franklin Bowles Gallery and worked with LeRoy on several projects in San francisco and New York over a period of years. But my favorite was talking LeRoy into painting a portrait of Washington Square in San Francisco. I believe it was one of the only portraits he did of a public park. My condolences to his wife Janet and his ever faithful companion Lynn.

Sorry to hear about the passing of LeRoy Neiman. During our first meeting with him at the Kentucky Derby Museum many years ago, he found out my wife was an artist. He took her aside and was telling her some of his trade secrets about how he painted. We will never forget that. The world has lost a true illustrator of life.

Leroy was a life long friend of my mother's Jacqueline Cryer, who herself passed away (3/11); sketching her several times over the years & painting a 1 1/4 size portrait , I'm sure that she was there to greet him upon his arrival; and it brings me some comfort knowing that she's now with one her dearest friends. Godspeed LeRoy.

...all I do have is a 1976 Burger King poster that I picked up in San Diego and have carried with me all these years! Maybe a little tattered but it may as well be an original because it has special meaning to me. The love of my life loved Leroy's work so much and there was no way I could afford an original so I had one of those posters mounted professionally as a meager gesture (after we attended a showing in San Francisco) and he got such a kick out of it that he hung it in his office and everyone commented on it and thought it was an original!! It was our private little thing...but meant as much to us as if it were an original!! I especially loved the painting he did for "Rocky"! So thanks for being a part of our lives and RIP...

Our sincerest condolence to Janet Nieman and family. I first met LeRoy at Tavern on the Green. He asked me to design his penthouse garden. As payment, I asked him to do a small sketch of my wife. He graciously agreed and produced a colorful portrait dedicated to the "To the Beautiful Gardener's Wife in the Garden of Eden." We love this work and admire it each day. But it is his kind spirit and generous soul that will be remembered always. It was a true honor to have met you both. Diana and I wish you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

A tremendous loss in American culture..
framing the events of my time.

Picture Mr. Neiman drew for me back in 1975 when we first met.

June 21, 2012

The first time we met I was 16 years old.
You marked that occasion by drawing my portrait. What a gift. Little did I know then that my real gift from you was a lifetime of friendship.

When I was a boy all of my friends wanted to grow up to be all of the people in your paintings. I wanted to be the man that painted them.

God Bless you.

So sad to hear of Mr. Neiman's passing. My thoughts are with his family. I was lucky enough to have met him twice and have his signature on several items. When he signed his Derby and Oaks posters in 1997 at the old Deitrich's, he was also signing Playboy limited edition cigar boxes. Playboy's press rep was there and was kind enough to take a professional photo of Mr. Neiman and myself, even though he was there to take photos of the cigar boxes and Mr. Neiman. Mr. Neiman told me that they would mail the photo to me and they did. I felt like I was meeting royalty, yet he treated me like an old friend. He was extremely kind. I would trade my signed items to still have the 1976 Burger King posters of his Olympic paintings that year. It was my first experience with art that really meant something to me and it is why I continued to pursue my love of art. He was the Monet of the United States. I will continue to enjoy his original pieces at the Muhammad Ali Museum.
