LeRoy Smies Obituary
LeRoy was born on January 16, 1931, to Jannes and Elvira (Bruggink) Smies. He graduated from Oostburg High School. Following high school, he was drafted to serve his country in the US Army, spending his time in Korea. LeRoy was united in marriage to Dorrine DeBruine on June 4, 1954, in Cedar Grove.
LeRoy was a member of Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Oostburg, where he served as deacon and treasurer. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and wood working. More than anything he loved spending time with his family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
LeRoy is survived by his daughters, Barbara (Mark) Kaat of Colorado and Carol Smies of Oostburg; two sons, Ron (Kim) Smies of Oostburg and Mark (Lori) Smies of Sheboygan; six grandchildren, Amanda Kaat, Adam Kaat, Joshua (Amanda) and Joseph (Ariana) Smies, Tye (significant other Lia) and Shannan (fiancé Alex) Smies; three great-grandchildren, Andrew and EmmaKay Vu and Isabella Romero. He is further survived by his sister, Janet (Frank) Wahlstrom; brothers-in-law, Jack DeTroye and Allan DeBruine; and sister-in-law, Mary Blank.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorrine; parents; sisters, Elizabeth DeTroye and Mary Ann (Richard) Claerbaut; and brother-in-law, Glenn Blank.
A funeral service to celebrate LeRoy's life will be held at Bethel OPC on Friday, January 20, 2023, at 11:00am. He will be laid to rest next to Dorrine at Oostburg Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may greet the family on Friday at church from 9:00am until the time of service.
Memorials are appreciated in LeRoy's name to Bethel OPC and Oostburg Christian School.
