Lester Glover Obituary

Rev. Lester I. Glover was born in Clifton, NJ, on June 11, 1925. He was the son of the late Alex and Edna Mae (Coley) Glover. Lester who was reared in Dooley County Ga. was educated in the local schools. He later graduated from Gillespie High School Cordele Ga., the Georgia Baptist College Macon Ga., and the American Baptist College and Seminary Nashville, TN where he earned his Doctorate of Divinity. He also studied at Rutgers the State University New Brunswick, NJ.
Early in life Lester accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. This was the beginning of a lifelong relationship of which Lester would share the Good News of Jesus Christ. He was baptized and later licensed and ordained into the ministry through his home church Piney Grove Baptist Church, Tippettsville, Ga., Rev. Babe Gordon, Pastor.
Rev. Glover was united in Holy Matrimony to Carrie Lamar on March 25, 1951. This marriage was blessed with two children. Rev. Glover was privileged to have shared over sixty years in the ministry. During these years God would permit him to mold and shape many lives through his many pastorates. He began pastoring in Georgia before relocating in New Jersey. His pastorates included: Pilgrim Baptist Church, Summit, NJ, Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, Newark, NJ now located in Irvington, NJ, New Hope Baptist Church, Brooklyn, NY, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Paterson, NJ and he organize the Gazaway Baptist Church, Paterson, NJ, from which he retired. While at the
Pilgrim Church, he would lead that congregation to erect a new church edifice and was blessed to have led the New Hope Church on two occasions. After retiring he became a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of North Jersey at Garfield.
Pastor Glover's church affiliations included serving as: President of the Paterson Pastors' Workshop, Vice Moderator of the Shiloh Baptist Association of NJ, member Baptist Ministers Conference of Newark and Vicinity. Pastor Glover was also a founding member, clergy member and board member for the Paterson Habitat for Humanity.
Rev. Glover's civic and community involvement included: establishing the first drug clinic in Passaic, Volunteer Parole Board State of New Jersey member Paterson Branch NAACP, Masonic Order. He worked with EUAC, PICA and Congressman William Pascrell. Rev Glover was a Marshall at the historic March on Washington in 1963.
His long standing commitment to helping others did not go unnoticed. He was the recipient of many citations and awards including those received from the Clifton Kiwanis, Mayors: Kramer, Graves and Pascrell and President William "Bill" Clinton.
Rev. Glover was one of the last links that shared with such venerable church leaders as Rev. J. M. Nabrit, Rev. William Holmes Borders, Rev. Sandy F. Ray, Rev. Gardner C. Taylor and others. He enjoyed sharing about his ministering and fellowship with them.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Walter Glover and Clarence Glover and one sister, Laverne Canady.
Peacefully Rev. Glover departed this life and entered eternal rest Saturday, January 31, 2009.
Rev. Lester I. Glover leaves to cherish precious memories: his beloved wife of fifty-seven years Carrie (Lamar) Glover; one son, Robert Lester "Brother" Glover of Paterson, NJ; one daughter, Ervenia Glover Benson, Paterson, NJ; daughter-in-law, Karen Adams Glover; son-in-law, Carmen W. Benson, Sr.; two grandchildren, Ashley Da Netta Glover, Keith Lamar Glover; two brothers, Oberry Samuel (Pauline) Glover, Queens, NY, Bobby
(Lossie) Glover, Perry, GA; two sisters, Willie Mae Davidson, Queens, NY, Emmage Jean Riggins, Bethlehem, PA; sister-in-law, Virginia (Willie) Pickett also surviving are nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, sons in the ministry and the E. 27th St. Family.
