Our most merciful God allowed Lewis Leonard Schmitz to peacefully pass away in his sleep on March 10th, 2026, following a long, heroic battle with cancer. He was approaching his 89th birthday.
Lewis was born on August 1, 1937, the only son of Albert Otto Schmitz, and Grace Terwilliger Schmitz.
A person of strong faith, he will be remembered for his positive approach to life, the love he had for his family, and his abiding love and respect for his country.
Lewis was a person of overwhelming positivity. When asked how he was doing, he always answered in the affirmative, using words such as “Great!” or “Wonderful!” He strongly believed that a positive attitude made for a longer, happier life.
He never liked to say good-bye, preferring the parting wish, “Have fun!”
Lewis was a longtime and active member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church, a former Marine and Commander of the American Legion Post 149, and an engaged member of the Dinwiddie Diamonds.
Lewis was particularly proud that he lived to see four generations of family carrying on the Schmitz name.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Flexon Schmitz, son Ron and his wife, Robin; his daughter Sharon and her husband Ethan, stepsons Rob and Howard, and Howard’s wife Lori; grandson Conner and his wife Chelsea; granddaughter Jennifer and her husband, Justin; step grandson, Austin and his wife Kira; and his great grandchildren Lauren, Peyton, and Griffin; as well as Lewis’ sister, Lozetta.
Visitation will be held Wednesday March 25th from 6 to 8 pm at Lebanon United Methodist Church in Dinwiddie. A Celebration of Life will be held at Lebanon United Methodist Church on Thursday March 26th at 11 am followed by a light lunch.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Lebanon United Methodist Church, 12450 Courthouse Road, Dinwiddie, VA 23841.
