Lewis Warren Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully at his home in Hopedale on Thursday, June 19, at the remarkable age of 100. His long and full life was a testament to his strength, kindness, and devotion to his family, friends, and country.
Lewis leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Marilyn (Olson) Smith, whose love and companionship were his steadfast anchors. He is also survived by his loving children: Jeffrey A. Smith and his wife Betty of Uxbridge; William B. Smith of Norwood; Thomas W. Smith and his wife Eileen of Whitinsville; and his daughter Christine Smith Kleya of Linwood. Lewis was the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His family circle extended even wider to include his dear stepchildren: Brian Hare of Raymore, Missouri; Laurie Odom and her husband Chris of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Melanie Hare of Wichita, Kansas. Through them, he was blessed with an additional 6 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 37 years, Elinor (Wood) Smith, who passed away in 1991, and his siblings Eleanor, William, Bernice, Gladys, and Nancy, whom he held dear in his heart.
Born in Whitinsville on August 19, 1924, to Warren and Esther (Andrew) Smith, Lewis carried with him the values instilled in him during his upbringing. He pursued his education at Northbridge Public Schools, attended Worcester Junior College,and earned his Industrial Engineering Degree from Worcester Polytechnic University (WPI). His dedication to service led him to proudly serve his country as a member of the United States Navy during both World War II and the Korean War as a gunner's mate. After the wars he continued his service in the Naval Reserve as a navigator on P-2 Neptune maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft, retiring in 1965.
Lewis built a respected career, working at the former Whitin Machine Works as a cabinet maker apprentice and in the time study department. He continued his career at George Meyer Company, rising to Vice President and General Manager of manufacturing until 1980. He finished his career as a manufacturing consultant where his expertise contributed to many projects for the Korean Government, concluding his professional journey in 1990.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Lewis lived a rich and active life. He was a proud member of the Whitinsville Golf Club, VFW, Whitin Male Glee Club,Solomon's Temple Masonic Lodge and Shriners. But mosttreasured were the quiet moments he spent creating with his hands. Whether crafting fine furniture or tackling DIY projects for his loved ones and many friends. Lewis poured his heart into every piece, leaving behind tangible reminders of his love that his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will cherish for generations.
