Lillian (Hieb) Burfeindt was born on January 16, 1926 on a farm north of Avon, South Dakota. She died Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall.
Lillian was a lifelong resident in the Avon area. She attended Country School Maxon 49 and graduated from Tripp High School in 1942. She helped her parents on the farm for two years before moving to Avon where she worked for Pat Crosby one year and at Hollman Drug until 1948. Lillian married Wallace Burfeindt March 31, 1948 in Tripp at the Reformed Parsonage and they were blessed with three children. She was a homemaker, worked at Gambles and Hardware Hank for 30 years, and also took in sewing.
Lillian was baptized and confirmed in the Emanuel Reformed Church. She and Wally joined the Presbyterian Church in Avon in 1949. She belonged to the Presbyterian Women's Organization, taught Bible School, and was chairman of the Service Committee for over 50 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 73 years holding various offices including Sergeant of Arms for many years. She and Wally were co-chairmen on the building committee for the Veteran's Memorial in 2000. She was a 4-H leader for many years. Lillian and Wally lended a helping hand to many elderly people after retirement. She loved gardening, traveling, sewing, country and polka music and dancing. Her biggest treasure was spending time with her family. After retirement she did crafts, quilting, embroidery, crocheting; taking part in craft fairs in Avon for 28 years.
Thankful for having shared her life are her children: Elaine Vesely, Tyndall, Ruth Ollila, Rapid City, and Roger (Jean) Burfeindt, Chamberlain; five grandchildren: Ross (Jennifer Snook) Haenfler, Grinnell, IA, Brad Haenfler, Rapid City, Jill (Wyatt) Larsen, Chamberlain, Laura (Scott) Welsh, Hartford, Lesley Burfeindt and Iris Huezo, Chamberlain; great grandchildren: Aidyn Reis, Liam, Kenley and Elliott Larsen, River and Wren Haenfler, Janaya and Kason Welsh, baby boy Huezo due in May; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends and relatives.
