Lillian Knox Medford Howard, age 90, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at Maggie Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of "Colonel" Garrett Medford and Gracie Lawrence Medford.  She was also preceded in death by her four brothers, Lawrence, Cecil, Truitt, and Brooks Medford. Lillian was in the 1951 class at Waynesville Township High School and a graduate of Blanton’s Business College.  She had a long, successful career as a Teller Supervisor at several major banking institutions including First Union, United Community Bank, and Wachovia.  Lillian was highly regarded by her coworkers for her great work ethic and ability to make them laugh no matter how difficult the day was.  A dedicated member of Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church she also loved music in all forms and was first chair clarinet in high school and first chair North Carolina All-State. She is survived by her beloved son, Daniel L. Howard, and his wife, Eleanor, who was like a daughter to her; and five grandchildren, Addison Howard, Sophie Howard, Rainee, Callie, and Mordecai. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023, at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Reverend John Ferree officiating.  Burial will follow at Upper Crabtree Community Cemetery.  The family will receive friends and loved ones from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior at the church.

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 133 Old Clyde Road, Waynesville, NC 28785 or Tuscola High School Band, 564 Tuscola School Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.

 

The care of Mrs. Howard has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
