Waterville Lionel George Mathieu, 83, died Fri., June 17, 2005 at his Morrill Ave. residence. He was born in Waterville, Apr. 30, 1922, the son of George and Lottie (Landry) Mathieu. Mr. Mathieu attended Waterville schools. He was proud of being a U.S. Army veteran of WW II and of receiving the Bronze Star. He had been employed at Hathaway Shirt Co. for 42 years. After retirement, he worked for Shaw's Grocery Store and enjoyed working as bagger and bottle collection clerk. He had also delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. He was a member of Bourque-Lanigan Post No. 5 American Legion and Forrest J. Pare Post VFW in Waterville.He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Francoise A. Mathieu who died Mar. 12, 2002.He is survived by three sons, Melvin Mathieu and wife Marcia and Leo E. Mathieu all of Waterville and Carl Mathieu and wife Sandra of Vassalboro; three daughters, Louise J. Mathieu and Jean P. Mathieu both of Waterville and Rita Card and husband David of Benton; four grandchildren, Renee, Ryan, Ashley and Michelle; three great grandchildren, Isabel, Sawyer and Isaac; best friends, Roland Bisson, Lionel Duperry and Gerald Pelotte.The family would like to give special thanks to the Dialysis Unit and nurses at MaineGeneral Med. Ctr, Thayer Unit for the wonderful care given to their Dad.A private graveside service will be held Wed. in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to Pine Tree Camp for Crippled Children and Adults, Pine Tree Society, P.O. Box 518, Bath, ME 04530.Condolences may be expressed at www.gallantfh.com Arrangements are with Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.
