Obituary For Lloyd Ivy
The Staff of Carter Funeral Home humbly announces the restful transition of Mr. Lloyd Ivy of Montgomery, AL at the age of 74.
Mr. Ivy or "Coach IVY" as known by many, a proud native son of Union Springs, AL. transitioned to eternity Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at his residence.
The Commemoration of Life will begin with a public visitation, Wednesday, November 29, 2023, from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Carter Funeral Home.
The Farewell Celebration will be held Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 11:00 noon from the sanctuary of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Union Springs, AL.
Pastor Gary Lewis will deliver the message of triumph.
Interment will follow in the Mason Cemetery.
Lloyd Ivy was born on January 30, 1949, at the John Andrew Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama. He later moved with his parents to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After returning to Alabama, he was reared by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mattie Herring, his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mattie M. Ivy and his aunt, Ms. Montague Ivy.
Lloyd confessed hope in Christ at an early age and joined Derris Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, Union Springs, Alabama.
His athleticism became very noticeable as he began to play Little League Baseball with Mr. Y. C, Nance's baseball teams. He was an outstanding student at Carver Elementary School. Throughout his years at Carver High School, he played in the marching band, and was on the basketball and football teams while maintaining honor roll status. Being an outstanding student athlete, at Carver High School enabled him to receive a four-year scholarship to Alabama College (now Alabama State University) where he played football, basketball, ran track and field and also on the swimming team. While at ASU, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, and later a master's degree in Biological Science. He was a Free Agent for the Kansas City Chiefs, he later played for the Anderson Packers a Minor League Football League. After returning to Montgomery, Alabama he was employed by the Montgomery Police Department and later the Alabama Prison System. He was employed by the Pike County Board of Education as a coach, and later Bullock County Board of Education as a coach until his retirement.
Coach Ivy's family consists of his wife, Shirley Cooks Ivy, two adult children, Natasha Ivy-Manora and Nigel Ivy, three grandchildren, Tia Manora, Keyshawn and Kalab Ivy, a devoted and loving sister, Nadine Ivy, a loving and devoted aunt, Ms., Martha Pruitt, two nephews Shymill and Verdine Ivy, three uncles, Harry Cannon, Frank Walton, and Lee Walton, Brother-in-laws James Cooks, Stanley (Lucy), Cooks, Jerome Cooks. Ronnie (Carolyn) Cooks and Evelyn (Perry) Davis a host of other loving family members and his Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity., Lloyd departed his life on Wednesday, November 22, 2023.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Sherman Ivy, grandmothers, grandfather and aunt.

I met Lloyd my freshman year at Alabama State University `69! I encountered a leader, great teammate and friend. You left an indelible mark on this world. I´m glad we talked toward the end. Rest in peace number 10!
