Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vincent Funeral Home - West Point on Sep. 4, 2025.
Logan Marshall Chestnutt passed away peacefully on the morning of August 24, 2025, in the loving arms of his parents. Logan battled Stage 4 Neuroblastoma with love, grace, and his memorable sense of humor for sixteen months. Through his unwavering faith he proved what he said, "Cancer is tough, but we're tougher!" Logan brought light to everyone who knew him, even those who only met him for a brief time. He was the love and joy of our lives, and our decade with him in our family will remain the happiest we will ever have. Logan loved school, church, Legos (it didn't matter what kinds), Minecraft, Harry Potter (a proud, true member of Gryffindor house), art, and music. He would come out of scans singing and would regularly sing to his nurses whatever song happened to be on his mind at the time. Fred Rogers left an indelible impact on his life, and Logan tried to embody the love Mr. Rogers had for all living things. He would always tell you his favorite word was love. Logan adored his family, who in turn adored him. He is survived by his parents, Alice & Spencer Chestnutt; his brother, Cameron Hager; his grandparents, Robert & Marianna Chestnutt, & John McCrimmon & Mary Ann Cary; his aunts & uncles, Kevin McCrimmon, Ian McCrimmon, Jason & Amy Chestnutt, Anna Chestnutt & Ben Messer; his cousins, Seamus Cary, Katie Chestnutt, and Henry Chestnutt; his great aunts and uncles, James (The Colonel) & Susan Cary, Janis and Robert Probst, Susan & Glenn Strickland, David Chestnutt, & Kevin & Delna McCrimmon; second cousins, Christopher Probst & Matthew Probst, & David Strickland. He was preceded in death by his second cousins Daniel Probst & Joseph Strickland. Logan did not want to be known as a child with cancer, and that is certainly not how he would want to be remembered. We ask that you remember him in the following ways: Logan's family should remember him as the spunky, witty, absolutely brilliant child that loved each of them more than words can say. Whether it was baking cookies, sharing a soda, playing with toys, reading books, birthday parties, or family get togethers, Logan was there for all of it, loved all of it, and remembered all of it until the very end. He loved each of you so much. Logan's teachers need to know how much of an impact each of them had on his life. He adored school and learning. He took every word you said as cherished information and looked up to you in ways you can't imagine. Thank you for always being there for our child. To Logan's friends, we know that this is a very sad and scary time. We know it is confusing and that even adults may not have all of the answers. We want you to know how much each of you meant to Logan. You were so much of what he thought about when he wasn't around you. He loved you and remembered everything you did together. Thank you for being so special. Members of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, we ask you to remember the child who would say the Our Father louder than anyone else in church, who loved taking communion, would go outside to speak to Mary, and who fell in love with the rosary service. Members of First Morning Star Baptist Church, we ask you to remember Logan as the little boy belting out "Every Praise", who had to say "Hi' after services, and who grew into a young man who could sit attentively listening to the word of God. We want to express our inexhaustible gratitude to the West Point community and our faith communities for your unwavering support throughout this extremely difficult time. Logan was the embodiment of love. Though our hearts are shattered and the waves of grief wash over us, we know that he is gazing down from above coaxing trees and butterflies into existence, interceding to save sea turtles from straws, and loving all of humanity with the light that radiated from him in this life magnified by our Father in Heaven thousandfold. A funeral mass will be held 3PM Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, 3570 King William Ave,
West Point, VA 23181. There will not be a public viewing, however, the family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, from 5pm-8pm, at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street,
West Point, VA 23181, with a Rosary Service beginning at 7pm, where all are welcome to attend. Interment to follow in the St. Theresa Cemetery,
West Point, VA. **Logan's service can be viewed at the following link: https://vimeo.com/1115828433/5a48c37844 In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the following organizations: Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters: Words cannot express our profound gratitude to CHKD for the treatment Logan received there. The doctors and nurses who work there are truly called to the profession. Logan loved them, and they became a second family over the time we spent there. We especially want to thank the HEMOC doctors and nurses for their outstanding love and care. Dr. William Owen was Logan's primary physician, and we could not have asked for a kinder or more humane person to walk this journey with. https://www.chkd.org/support-us/donate/#:~:text=As%20a%20charitable%2C%20nonprofit%20health,illness%2C%20or%20mental%20health%20concerns.&text=For%20more%20information%20about%20supporting,or%20Gifts%40CHKD.org. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia: Neuroblastoma is the second most common form of childhood cancer, which most people have never heard of. It is also one of the most difficult cancers pediatric or otherwise to treat. CHOP is the leading research hospital in the country for this type of cancer, and they are continually making strides for the benefit of children with this hideous disease. https://give2.chop.edu/give/243741/#!/donation/checkout Project EveryChild: The organization is working tirelessly to create an international database for the global sharing of childhood cancer research, along with tumor samples that will be accessible to doctors around the world without having to spend months working through governmental red tape. They provide biopsy analysis of tumors to families, often free of charge. Logan donated his primary tumor here as the first Neuroblastoma tumor in the collection and insisted on signing the donation form himself. https://www.beposfdn.org/DONATE/donate-new.aspx The Arbor Day Foundation: As many people know, Logan was adamant about protecting the environment. He once reproached a nursing care partner for asking him to throw away a tissue after using it once. He deplored waste and would tell anyone who would listen how the hospital needed a recycling program. He was always focused on the need to plant trees (many trees, as one tree would not help the rate at which trees are being cut down). https://www.arborday.org/donate?utm_source=google&utm_medium=paid-search&utm_campaign=03667&utm_term=&utm_content=donate-today&utm_source=google&utm_medium=&utm_campaign=Pmax_Commemorative&utm_term=&utm_content=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=17817132691&gbraid=0AAAAAD_pTIojXZ9D3obvTG1sJTzcskm8J&gclid=CjwKCAjwk7DFBhBAEiwAeYbJsaU5YlQ57X0Sa5ce5hEnkbuCUWp3hbRfLgChSt36b_wZyU1X4sV7WxoCUHoQAvD_BwE
