Lois May Don
(Mama Don)
May 5, 1932 – December 16, 2024
Lois May Don, lovingly known as "Mama Don," passed away peacefully at Danbury Hospital on December 16, 2024, surrounded by her family at the age of 92. She was born on May 5, 1932, during the Great Depression, to Frances Sarah Tellier Farnsworth Chen and Albert Farnsworth. Growing up in such difficult times, Lois learned to be resourceful, developing life skills that would stay with her forever. She learned the art of growing and canning food and became adept at making the most out of what she had. Lois was especially known for her creative approach to meals-often finding clever ways to reuse last night's dinner, transforming it into delicious soups, casseroles, and new dishes for the following day.
Lois had unwavering convictions and always did what she believed was right. She was known for her strong will, even from a young age. In school, when her teacher would swat her hand for writing with her left hand, Lois remained undeterred and continued to write with her left hand, proving her resilience early in life.
She often spoke fondly of her childhood, including her dislike for warm, raw milk that her father would bring home from the farm, and her dislike of oatmeal. One memorable childhood story was when she refused to eat oatmeal and, after being told she could not leave the table until she finished, secretly tried to dump it in the sink. Eventually, her mother gave up trying to force her to eat it.
Lois worked as a district bookkeeper for Friendly's for many years. She loved spending time with her family, whether it was shopping, going to tag sales, dining out, or just getting out of the house. She especially cherished visits with her siblings and other family members, always finding joy in their company. Lois also loved attending family parties and outings, always making sure that no one ever left hungry. She took great pride in making sure there was always more than enough food, and if anyone did leave hungry, "it was their own fault" because there was always plenty of food and leftovers to spare.
Lois was predeceased by her parents, Frances Sarah Tellier Farnsworth Chen and Albert Farnsworth, her brother Albert "Wayne" Farnsworth, and her sister Jane Ellen Farnsworth. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Anthony Hicks Sr., her grandson, Adam Hicks as well as her ex-husband Bruno Don.
