Lois Sullivan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Newbaker Funeral Home - Blairstown on Mar. 11, 2026.
Lois Sullivan, 88, passed away on March 10.

Born in Oxford, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Ken and Cecilia Schantz of Hillsdale, NJ. She was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School in Hackensack and earned her Bachelor's degree from Montclair State University and a Master's degree from Columbia University.

Mrs. Sullivan spent most of her life in Hillsdale, New Jersey, later residing in Blairstown, NJ from 2000 to 2023. She spent her final years in Venice, Florida, and Morris Plains, New Jersey.

She devoted her life to education, teaching at the high school, college, and graduate school levels. She was a founding faculty member of Bergen Community College, where she taught from 1968 until her retirement in 2000 and was later named Professor Emerita. Earlier in her career, she taught at Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, NJ, and also held teaching assignments at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia in 1969 and in Nassau, Bahamas.

A devoted member of her faith community, she was active for many years at St. John the Baptist Parish in Hillsdale, and later at St. Jude's in Blairstown and St. Virgil's in Morris Plains.

Lois was known for her quick wit, warmth, and kindness toward everyone she met. Her passion for teaching and her dedication to helping students discover their individual talents shaped both her professional career and her personal life.

She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, The Honorable Timothy J. Sullivan.

She is survived by her sister, Maria Schantz of Montclair, NJ; her sons, Timothy and Kieran, and their wives, Megan and Mercedes; and her beloved grandchildren, Timothy IV, Paxton, Sinead, Hendrix, and Sionainn.

Friends and family may gather for a visitation on March 14, from 11AM-12PM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 12PM at St. Jude RC Church, Blairstown, NJ. Burial to follow at Hope Moravian Cemetery.
