Lois Marie Griffin Tanner

Lois Marie Griffin Tanner, born January 5, 1929 in Wilmer, AL to the late James and Jennie Mae Griffin. She was a lifelong resident of the Howell Community. Lois married her childhood sweetheart, Caylor Lane Tanner on June 7, 1944. On November 14, 1945, she gave birth to her one & only child Billy Ray Tanner Sr. Throughout her life she worked at the garment factory in Lucedale and in 1970 she became the owner/operator of Tanners Grocery. Mrs. Tanner enjoyed sewing, crocheting, making quilts for family and friends, and going to gospel sings. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church and was a very giving and faithful member of the community being the driving force behind fund raising money for the Howell Community Center, the Howell Volunteer Fire Dept., and countless members of the community who needed help throughout her life.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Jennie Mae Griffin; brothers, Lamar Griffin and Burel Griffin; sisters, Maurice Brittner and Loretta Boler; and the keys to her heart, her son Billy Ray Tanner Sr. and grandson Ronald (Peewee) Tanner.

She leaves behind her beloved daughter-in-law Margaret Tanner; grandchildren: Bill Tanner (Susan), Ashley Tanner, and Donald Tanner; sister, Sandra Tanner; six great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and many honorary great grandchildren as well.

Pallbearers will be Bill Tanner, Alexander Tanner, Jackson Tanner, Jake Edmonds, John Stephens, and Gary Edmonds.

Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Tanner and James Hays.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at 12:00 PM at Midway Baptist Church, 2206 Howell Tanner Chapel Rd Lucedale, MS 39452.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Midway Baptist Church, 2206 Howell Tanner Chapel Rd Lucedale, MS 39452.
