Butch was born the son of John and Sylvia (Bolton) Buys on July 26, 1957 in Akron, Iowa. He grew up on a farm outside Akron with his nine siblings. He graduated from Akron-Westfield High School. Butch married Deb Smith on October 1, 2005 in Le Mars, Iowa and they were blessed with 20 years together.
He worked for Knox Gelatin for a few years before beginning his trucking career. He loved having a job where he could see the countryside. He was a reliable resource for dispatch, and he answered countless questions in detail with specific mile markers and locations all from memory. He finally retired after 40 years of trucking.
He loved riding his Harley Davidson. He made the annual trip to Sturgis for 30 plus years. Butch loved hanging out with his grandchildren and was a very proud papa. He enjoyed watching his granddaughter Layla dance, and he would always yell and cheer her on from the crowd.
