Lorene Joyce Capek

Lorene Joyce Capek, 94, originally from Walkerton, Indiana, passed away on January 17, 2026, in Hendersonville, NC.

Lorene was born on July 1, 1931, in South Bend, Indiana to Flossie L. (Gardner) Fitzgerald and Bruce P. Fitzgerald. In 1951, she married James Harold "Jim" Capek. They shared 74 years of marriage, including many sunny winters at their second home in Fort Myers, Florida.

Lorene was a devoted homemaker, wife and mother to two children, Loren and Vickie. She was a member of the local chapter of Tri Kappa in Walkerton, Indiana, and the United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for several years. Lorene supported her children in all their activities, serving as a den mother for her son's Cub Scout troop and attending her daughter and son's 4-H events. Later in life, she and Jim volunteered for many years for the Salvation Army in Fort Myers, Florida.

She enjoyed sewing, reading, and baking. Lorene's handwritten letters brought joy to friends near and far. She will be lovingly remembered for her quick wit, dry humor, and, of course, her famous lasagna!

Lorene was preceded in death by her son, Loren L. Capek, and her parents.

She is survived by her husband, James Capek; daughter, Vickie (Joseph) Seliga; granddaughter, Laine (Jacob) Plummer; great-grandsons: Miles and Mason Plummer; brother, Dallas (Phyllis) Fitzgerald; sister-in-law, Mary (Wayne) Capek; and several nieces and nephews.
