Lorene Sampson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sommerville Funeral Services - Akron on Mar. 20, 2026.
In Loving Memory Of

Lorene Sampson

Sunrise: February 18, 1931

Sunset: March 1, 2026

On Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 11:01 a.m. in Phoenix, Arizona, Heaven welcomed another angel as Lorene Sampson peacefully received her wings.
Lorene was born on February 18, 1931, in Pinewoods, Alabama, to Leonard and Luisa McGraw. She was one of six children born to this union: Hoover, Almdn, Emma, Hite, Lorene, and Dorothy.

At the age of 18, Lorene married Willie Lee O'Neal, and to this union six children were born: Nadis, twins Lonnie and Lolcie, Willie M., Stewart, and Stephanie.
Lorene devoted many years as a loving homemaker before beginning her career at the University Club of Akron, Ohio, where she worked in the kitchen. Her strong work ethic carried her through many roles well into her 70's.

After her divorce from Willie Lee O'Neal, Lorene later married Fred Sampson. She was deeply loved by all who knew her and will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Known for her honesty and spirited personality, Lorene often spoke her mind, bringing laughter and joy to those around her.
A woman of deep faith, Lorene was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord and faithfully prayed for her family. She had a gift for sewing and a passion for gardening. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling with her close friends, creating cherished memories along the way.

Lorene became a dedicated member of Providence Baptist Church on Rhodes Avenue under the leadership of Pastor J.W. Wheeler. She faithfully served in many capacities, including the Jubilee Choir, the Kitchen Ministry-where she served as overseer for many years-and the Providence Missionary Society, where she also held the role of Vice President. She was especially committed to ministering to the sick and shut-in.

Lorene was preceded in death by her parents; all of her siblings; her sons, Lacie and Stewart; her nephew, Deshon Kimbrough; and both of her husbands.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children, Nadis, Lonnie (Thelma); Willie M. and Stephanie (Robert); her daughter-in-law, Annie P. O'Neal; her special sister, Marva Banks; and a host of beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and dear friends.
Lorene's legacy of love, faith, strength, and unwavering devotion to family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 2026, from 11:00 am until 12:00 noon at Providence Baptist Church, 458 Madison Ave. Akron, Oh 44320. Funeral service will immediately follow. Interment Glendale Cemetery.
