Loretta Wescom, a beloved schoolteacher and active member of her community, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on March 15, 1945, in North Adams Massachusetts. She dedicated her life to nurturing and educating young minds at Eden Elementary School, where she touched countless lives with her passion for teaching and her warm, engaging personality.
Loretta was a proud graduate of Johnson State College, class of 1967, where she laid the foundation for a fulfilling career in education. Over the years, her commitment to her students and school community earned her the affectionate title of 'Social Butterfly,' as she effortlessly made connections and spread joy among those around her.
Her love for animals was evident throughout her life, particularly her cherished dog, Keesha, with whom she shared many fond memories. Loretta's compassionate spirit extended to many pets, who were an integral part of her joyful existence.
Beyond her profession, Loretta was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 62 years and a devoted member of the United Church of Johnson. Her enthusiasm for life was reflected in her many hobbies and interests, including her obsession with collecting giraffes, gardening—especially her beautiful flowers—and playing bingo. Loretta’s vibrant personality left a lasting impact on her friends and family, particularly Liz Gamble, who was not only a good friend but also a caregiver.
Loretta is survived by her loving family, including her sons Robert and wife Karen Wescom, Darrell and wife Billie Jo Wescom; daughters Carrie and husband Jason Tallman, and Amy and husband Kraig Locke; granddaughters Miranda, Cassandra, and Andrea Wescom; grandsons Hunter and wife Kelly, Noah, and Jacob Tallman; and great granddaughter Payton Wesson. She is predeceased by her husband Merritt Wescom, parents Paul and Margaret Dary, in-laws Roy and Marian Wescom, and several aunts and uncles.
Loretta Wescom's legacy of kindness, dedication, and love for those she encountered will forever be remembered by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she enriched.
