Lorraine Shaw Black was born on May 24, 1937, in Richfield, Utah to Lawrence William Shaw and Doris Lepri Hendrickson. Lorraine had four brothers and two sisters. The family lived in Venice, Utah on their cattle ranch. She lived there until she left to attend BYU, which is where she met her future husband, John Clifford Black. In Lorraine's words, "It was very easy to meet him because he lived next-door!"
The following year she worked at Telluride Power Company in Richfield as a receptionist. John and Lorraine were married that same year on September 4, 1957, in the Manti Temple.
While living in Provo, their first daughter, Kathleen, was born. Soon after, they moved to Salt Lake City and then to Burns, Oregon, where their son Martin Clifford and their other daughter Christine were born.
They lived there for nine years. While living in Burns, they built their home. John was the First Bishop when the branch was made a ward. They enjoyed the closeness of the members and had many opportunities of holding different positions in the church.
In 1969, John's employment with the BLM took them to Alaska where they lived for 10 years. They enjoyed the wild game animals including the moose that often showed up in their backyard! The scenery was beautiful, and she especially enjoyed the long summer days. The towns people and the church members were very friendly to them, and they loved watching the membership increase greatly while living there for Anchorage.
From Anchorage they moved to
Boise, Idaho. They lived in Boise for 46 years. She loved gardening and the fresh fruit in the area. Their three children are all married and have children and grandchildren of their own. Their youngest daughter, Christy, passed away in April 2024. Their oldest daughter lives in Boise and their son lives in Neola, Utah.
Lorraine held many positions in the church including Relief Society President (three different times), Relief Society Secretary, Visiting Teaching Coordinator, Stake and Ward Junior Sunday School Coordinator, District Primary President, YWMIA Teachers and President, Ward Primary President, Teacher, and Counselor, Organist for Junior Sunday School and Primary, Den Mother (two different times), and Secretary (two different times) for the Area Directors of the Seminary and Institute Programs.
After moving to Boise, she enjoyed watching and playing with her nine grandchildren while they were little.
In 1988, she started working at the Emporium as a sales associate. She really enjoyed the time that she worked for them.
She loved Boise and thought it was a great place to live.
Lorraine is preceded in death by her husband John and her daughter Christine.
She is survived by her daughter, Cathleen (Doug) Eslinger, her son, Martin (Donette) Black, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
