Lorraine Holzsweig Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory on Dec. 14, 2024.
Graveside Service: 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2024Location: Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula
Lorraine Holzsweig, 98, of Newport News, VA, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2024, after a brief illness. She was born in Philadelphia to Esther and Hyman Bartman. Lorraine grew up during the Depression era with very little, but she was able to spend time as a child on the beach and boardwalk in Atlantic City with her extended family. Her love for the seaside continued throughout her long life. And she enjoyed many vacations on the beach in the Outer Banks well into her nineties.
Lorraine lived in several states and was married to Stanley Klatz until his Air Force-related death in 1957. She was able to find love again and build a new life with Irvin "Buddy" Holzsweig in 1961, settling in Newport News. Her favorite saying was, "Wait on me; I'm rich." While she never yearned for monetary wealth, her greatest riches were her children, grandchildren and Buddy. Lorraine taught her grandchildren - the light of her life - to knit, play Scrabble (even on the beach), make spinach balls and play Rummikub.
During her last few months, she pursued a past interest of painting and put her brush to canvas daily creating colorful works of art with her faithful canine companion, Mimi, at her feet.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy. She is survived by her children, Linda Grovenburg (Virgil), Gary Klatz (Ruth) and Elisa Finneran (Patrick); grandchildren, Paul Berger (Heather), Sara Meloni (Chris), Alex Finneran and Carly Finneran (Jacob); great-grandchildren Brooke, Micah, Gabi, Ryan and Harper; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lorraine's family would like to thank her recent caregivers for their devoted time and love. In lieu of flowers, donations to Temple Sinai (Newport News) or a local animal shelter would be appreciated. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula by Rabbi Severine Sokol. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
